The Calgary Flames completed a big piece of business last week with their hiring of Craig Conroy as general manager. Next up? A new head coach. On Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading, TSN’s Darren Dreger noted that the Flames’ pursuit of a new bench boss is moving into “full gear” this week.
Here’s Dreger:
“They’re in it this week, no doubt about that. On Monday they moved into full gear and what that means is internal discussions among the management group and the process of beginning Zoom calls with some of the candidates and also seeking permission for those that are under contract. We talked about this last week: I look at Gerard Gallant, an experienced NHL coach recently let go by the New York Rangers as being a top qualified candidate. I look at Travis Green, if he’s not scooped up by another team that’s in the market for a head coach he’ll be a top candidate. The internal guys include Kirk Muller, Mitch Love, Ryan Huska – all strong candidates. And here’s one from kinda left field, the Ontario Hockey League and Windsor Spitfires’ Marc Savard, who’s believed to be getting some consideration as well.”

Dreger’s comments more or less align with what we heard from Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman on Monday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman noted that he thinks the Flames have “a long list,” with the emphasis on the word long. Among the names that Friedman put out there regarding the Flames’ gig were Peter Laviolette (who he theorized declined interest), Andrew Brunette (before he was hired by Nashville) and Alex Tanguay. And for clarity’s sake, Marek was the first prominent media type to theorize Savard being in the mix for the Calgary job.
We’ll have more on the Flames’ coaching search as it unfolds.
