The Flames announce 2016-17 main camp roster and schedule

The 2015-16 season was not very good for the Calgary Flames. They had bad goaltending, bad defensive zone play, bad special teams and, ultimately, a pretty disappointing result in the standings.
The first step to a better result kicks off this week, as main training camp for the 2016-17 season gets underway with medical testing on Thursday and on-ice action beginning on Friday.
Full roster after the jump: [inj. = injured; WC = World Cup]

The Veterans

“Veterans” are defined by the CBA in regards to the pre-season as anybody 100+ career NHL games, a skater that played 30+ games last season, a goalie that played 30+ games last season (or dressed in 50+), and the first round selection(s) from the most recent NHL Draft.
The Flames have 27 veterans in camp.
  • Goalies Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson
  • Defensemen Mark Giordano, Jyrki Jokipakka, Dougie Hamilton, T.J. Brodie, Dennis Wideman, Ladislav Smid, Deryk Engelland and Nicklas Grossman
  • Forwards Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Brandon Bollig, Lance Bouma, Micheal Ferland, Matt Stajan, Sam Bennett, Mikael Backlund, Michael Frolik, Troy Brouwer, Alex Chiasson, Chris Higgins, Matt Frattin, Linden Vey, Luke Adam, Lauri Korpikoski and Matthew Tkachuk
Teams have to dress at least eight veterans per game and the addition of the handful of PTO bodies will give the club a bit of flexibility until everybody returns from the World Cup of Hockey.

The Invites

Trying for a contract of some kind are the following try-out players:
  • D Nicklas Grossmann
  • D Aaron Hyman
  • D Colby Robak
  • D Mikhail Grigoriev
  • F Brayden Burke
  • F Mikkel Aagaard
  • F Dennis Kravchenko
  • F Chris Higgins
  • F Lauri Korpikoski
  • F Luke Adam

    The Schedule

The Flames play seven pre-season games, while the maximum anybody can play is six (given the split-squad openers). Given the clustering in the pre-season schedule, we have three periods where cuts will likely happen.
    • On Monday, Sept. 26, there are simultaneous games between the Flames and Oilers in Calgary and Edmonton.
    • On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Flames head off to Winnipeg to play the Jets.
    Then expect some cuts.
    • On Friday, Sept. 30, the Flames host the Canucks.
    • On Sunday, Oct. 2, the Flames host the Jets.
    Then expect more cuts.
    • On Wednesday, Oct. 5, the Flames host Arizona.
    • On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Flames head to Vancouver for their last pre-season game.
Then more cuts, as the rosters have to be set by October 11.
