The Flames are juggling several interesting young goaltenders

Gang, sometimes I feel like it’s tough to judge goaltenders entirely by their statistics.
When it comes to the various young netminders in the Calgary Flames pipeline, context for their performances seems pretty important.
For the Wranglers, the original goaltending tandem was veteran Ivan Prosvetov with 24-year-old rookie Owen Say. In the ECHL, the Flames also had 22-year-old rookie Arsenii Sergeev paired with veteran Connor Murphy.
Since the season began, Prosvetov got hurt, so Say was joined by Sergeev. Then Say got hut, and Sergeev was joined by Murphy. Now Prosvetov seems set for a return, so Murphy has been returned to the ECHL and we’ll get a Prosvetov and Sergeev tandem – potentially for the remainder of the season. It’s worth noting that the Wranglers have played most of the season without Yan Kuznetsov, probably their top two-way defender, and the last six weeks without Hunter Brzustewicz, probably their top offensive defender.
Shockingly, the Wranglers have had some defensively challenges without their top defensive pairing. But even with that, they’ve gotten some good goaltending performances from Say and Sergeev. Heck, we’d point out that Sergeev often sees a ton of (good) shots against during his outings, but has performed well.
Meanwhile, in Russia, Yegor Yegorov and Kirill Zarubin have performed well on some pretty lean teams.
Finding goaltenders feels as much of an art as it is a science, but the Flames have had some success with it lately.
Onto the updates!
