The Flames will draft at 18th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft (with New Jersey’s pick)

With the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs winding down, we’re getting some clarity on what the 2025 NHL Draft will look like for the Calgary Flames.
Due to their many, many trades and trade conditions, the Flames owe Montreal a first-round pick and are owed first-round picks by both New Jersey and Florida. By virtue of the results of the first round of the playoffs so far, the pick the Flames receive from the Devils will land at 18th overall.
Here’s a quick rundown of how things are shaping up for the Flames for the draft in late June.
Picks the Flames own
- 1st round, 18th overall [1] (from New Jersey)
- 1st round, 22nd overall [tentative] [2] (from Florida)
- 2nd round, 54th overall [tentative] [3] (from Colorado, via Washington)
- 3rd round, 80th overall
- 5th round, 144th overall
- 6th round, 176th overall
- 7th round, 2o8th overall
Note 1: The Flames received this pick from New Jersey to complete a June 2024 trade. That swap sent Jacob Markstrom to New Jersey in exchange for Kevin Bahl and this pick.
Note 2: The Flames received this pick from Florida to complete a July 2022 trade. That transaction sent Matthew Tkachuk and a 2025 fourth-round pick (see below) to Florida in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and this pick. [The slotting of this pick has yet to be solidified; if Florida advances to the Eastern Conference Final or the Stanley Cup Final, this pick would slide back to the 29th to 32nd overall range.]
Note 3: The Flames received this pick from Washington as part of a June 2024 trade. That move sent Andrew Mangiapane to Washington in exchange for this pick. The Capitals had previously acquired this pick from Colorado in March 2023 in exchange for Lars Eller. [The slotting of this pick have yet to be solidified; if Colorado advances to the Western Conference Final or the Stanley Cup Final, this pick would slide back to the 61st to 64th overall range.]
Picks the Flames traded
- 1st round, 16th overall [4] (to Montreal)
- 2nd round, 48th overall [5] (to Philadelphia)
- 4th round, 112th overall (to Florida)
Note 4: Montreal receives this pick from the Flames as part of an August 2022 trade. That move sent Sean Monahan and this pick to Montreal in exchange for future considerations. In the event that the Flames win the draft lottery and this pick is upgraded to 6th overall, then Florida’s first-round pick would go to Montreal instead.
Note 5: Philadelphia receives this pick from the Flames as part of a January 2025 trade. That move sent Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, this pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost.
The 2025 NHL Draft takes place June 27 & 28 from Los Angeles, CA. It’s the first – and perhaps last – “decentralized” draft, with the top prospects and a few representatives from each team at the central location, but most of the team personnel and media staying in their home markets. We’ll have all sorts of previews and coverage of the 2025 NHL Draft in the coming weeks.
