If you’re a general manager in the National Hockey League, you’ve probably been calling the Calgary Flames quite a bit over the past three years, as Flames GM Craig Conroy has radically changed the club’s roster.
According to a report from our colleagues at Daily Faceoff, if you call the Flames these days they’re still pretty open to continuing to transform their roster.
On Friday, Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reported that the Flames are open to talking trade on, well, just about anybody, with a handful of exceptions.
Speaking with team sources earlier in the week, DFO was told that the Flames will be entertaining a similar thought process this summer and are willing to trade just about anyone on their roster. According to sources, the Flames are “open to (move) any guys other than (goaltender) Dustin Wolf, (forwards) Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato and defenseman Zayne Parekh.’’
Dustin Wolf was a seventh-round pick in 2019 and he’s signed through 2032-33 with a $7.5 million cap hit. Matt Coronato was a first-round pick in 2021 and he’s signed through 2031-32 with a $6.5 million cap hit. Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh are both 2024 first-round picks, signed on their entry-level deals through 2027-28 with cap hits of $953,750 each.
Since Conroy became general manager, he’s traded a bevy of established veterans with an aim towards making the NHL roster younger and more competitive. Among those who have departed since the spring of 2023 include Tyler Toffoli, Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, Jacob Markstrom, Andrew Mangiapane, Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri, a process that has landed the Flames five first-round picks, six second-round picks, and a slew of prospects.
The most prominent potential trade chip still on the Flames roster – for now – is Blake Coleman, a two-time Stanley Cup champion that was the subject of constant trade rumours before the Mar. 6 trade deadline. The Flames reportedly received offers on Coleman and Zach Whitecloud – and probably others, too – but didn’t get offers good enough to pull the trigger.
The Flames have prices in mind for pretty much everybody on their roster. And aside from Wolf, Coronato, Gridin and Parekh, they’re willing to listen to offers.
