It’s been a wild few days for new Calgary Flames forwards Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost.
On Thursday evening, following the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 home loss to the New York Islanders at Wells Fargo Center, the duo were informed that they had been traded from the organization that had drafted them and sent to the Flames.
Friday was spent packing bags and traversing the continent to join their new team – as noted by Ryan Leslie on Sunday’s broadcast, Flames GM Craig Conroy and PR guru Peter Hanlon flew to Philadelphia to meet the newest members of the team. The quartet landed in Calgary in the evening.
Saturday was their first day on the job, with both Farabee and Frost donning the Flaming C for the very first time – first at morning skate, then in the Flames’ game against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Flames skated to a 3-1 loss against the Red Wings on Saturday. Following the game, head coach Ryan Huska was asked for his assessment of his two new players.
“I liked them both,” said Huska. “I thought they did a good job. It’s been a long couple days for them. And I thought they did a good job. We threw them pretty much into every situation, and I thought both guys handled it well.”
Farabee played 18:01, slotting in on the top line alongside Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau.
Frost played 17:37, playing on the third line between Martin Pospisil and Yegor Sharangovich, while also factoring into the first power play unit. He had three shots on goal, including a strong scoring chance in the third period.

It goes without saying that the last few days have been a bit chaotic for Frost and Farabee. As much as both player indicated that they’re welcoming a fresh start, there’s been a lot going on for both players since Thursday night. Frost noted that Saturday’s game was actually a bit of a break from the frenzy of the past few days.
“There’s been so much going on around it that it was kind of nice to just be on the ice and focus on playing hockey for a few hours there,” said Frost.
Frost and Farabee won’t need to wait long for their second game with the Flames: they head to Seattle to complete a back-to-back set against the Kraken on Sunday night. It also continues a stretch of three games in four nights for both the Flames and their two new players.
“It’s tough to come into a back-to-back for sure,” said Frost. “But at the same time, it might be better because you can kind of just go play hockey, like I said, not worry about stuff and, you know, regroup after.”
The two new guys have been, if you forgive the pun, thrown right into the fire with the Flames with just a morning skate under their belts. They’re in big roles, and played more than they usually do on Saturday night because Huska played the fourth line less than usual after they were victimized on an early Red Wings goal.
Frost and Farabee are smart hockey players. As they get more familiar with the Flames’ systems and players, they’ll undoubtedly improve. Their introductory performances on Saturday were perfectly fine, and set a nice baseline for their futures with the hockey club.
