A week ago, the only Calgary Flames prospects active in meaningful games were their Russian goals – and as you’ll see, they’re not playing a ton these days.
But flash forward to this week, and after the return to major junior of many of the organization’s best and brightest young players, suddenly there’s a frenzy of action. And things are only going to get busier over the next couple of weeks as the club’s college prospects get started, followed soon after by the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.
All we can say is: the best way to take in all the prospect action is to pick a favourite player (or team) and focus in on them. Or try to tackle it all if you’re feeling ambitious.
Let’s check in on the first week of action for the majority of the youngsters.
Andrew Basha – LW/C, Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL
18; Calgary’s second round pick (41st overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 5’11”, 174 pounds; shoots left; FN’s 5th-ranked prospect 2024

2023-24 (WHL) | 63 | 30 | 55 | 85 | 69 | 52 | 41 | 189 | 33.41 |
Basha has had an eventful few weeks. He was really good in Flames training camp and didn’t look at all out of place in the NHL pre-season as an 18-year-old.
He returned to Medicine Hat, scored a sweet power play goal, and then signed his entry-level deal.
Tic-tac-WHOA!

Jacob Battaglia – LW, Kingston Frontenacs, OHL
18; Calgary’s second round pick (62nd overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’1″, 196 pounds; shoots left; FN’s 11th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 3 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 7 | 4 | 4 | 11 | 61.80 |
2023-24 (OHL) | 67 | 31 | 34 | 65 | 54 | 39 | 34 | 168 | 25.70 |
Battaglia was part of the first round of junior assignments made by the Flames, which afforded him the chance to get a full weekend in the OHL. He ended up with seven points, among the OHL’s league leaders.
Matvei Gridin – RW, Shawinigan Cataractes, QMJHL
18; Calgary’s first round pick (28th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’1″, 182 pounds; shoots left; FN’s 6th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe

Gridin’s 2024-25 fate has been revealed, as he was assigned to Shawinigan. He played his first weekend in Canadian major junior and had a quiet, albeit offensively productive, weekend. He scored a really nice goal as his first QMJHL marker.

Axel Hurtig – D, Calgary Hitmen, WHL
19; Calgary’s seventh round pick (208th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft; 6’4″, 202 pounds; shoots left
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe

2023-24 (J20) | 27 | 3 | 8 | 11 | 7 | 11 | 7 | 54 | 15.10 |
Hurtig played his first two WHL games this weekend. With Carter Yakemchuk still at Ottawa’s NHL camp, the Hitmen defensive pairs have been shuffling and Hurtig played a game with Dax Williams and a game with Wyatt Pisarczyk. He’s still adjusting to the North American game.
Eric Jamieson – D, Everett Silvertips, WHL
19; Calgary’s seventh round pick (208th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’3″, 200 pounds; shoots left
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 12.38 |
2023-24 (WHL) | 66 | 10 | 22 | 32 | 21 | 27 | 18 | 174 | 12.01 |
Jamieson has been named co-captain of the Silvertips. He registered an assist this weekend.
Hunter Laing – C/RW, Prince George Cougars, WHL
18; Calgary’s sixth round pick (170th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’5″, 205 pounds; shoots right
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe

2023-24 (WHL) | 66 | 11 | 14 | 25 | 18 | 20 | 14 | 101 | 9.38 |
Laing has been playing on the wing so far. He scored the game-winning goal in his first game back from Flames camp.

Henry Mews – D, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
18; Calgary’s third round pick (74th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’0″, 181 pounds; shoots right; FN’s 9th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 10 | 13.24 |
2023-24 (OHL) | 65 | 15 | 46 | 61 | 38 | 35 | 24 | 153 | 24.86 |
On one hand, Mews has just one assist. On the other hand, he has 10 shots, so at least he’s generating a ton, right?
Luke Misa – LW/C, Brampton Steelheads, OHL
18; Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 5’10”, 170 pounds; shoots left; FN’s 13th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 39.73 |
2023-24 (OHL) | 66 | 26 | 55 | 81 | 56 | 58 | 39 | 210 | 32.51 |
Brampton is poised to be a massively strong team this year – we strongly encourage draft fans to look up Porter Martone – and Misa had three points over his opening weekend. He tends to get points in bunches, so this qualifies as a slow start by his standards.
Etienne Morin – D, Moncton Wildcats, QMJHL
19; Calgary’s second round pick (48th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft; 6’0″, 180 pounds; shoots left; FN’s 10th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 9 | 11.64 |
2023-24 (QMJHL) | 58 | 12 | 37 | 49 | 32 | 21 | 13 | 191 | 19.67 |
Morin had a ton of shots and scored his first goal in his first weekend of action.
Zayne Parekh – D, Saginaw Spirit, OHL
18; Calgary’s first round pick (9th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’0″, 179 pounds; shoots right; FN’s 1st-ranked prospect 2024
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 |
2023-24 (OHL) | 66 | 33 | 63 | 96 | 66 | 54 | 39 | 224 | 38.53 |
Parekh was re-assigned from Flames camp at the end of last week, calling it a humbling experience. (Disclaimer: I thought he was really good in that camp and stood out positively in Penticton.) He made it back to Michigan in time to play a game that same weekend with Saginaw. He’s poised for a big, big season.
Daniil Chechelev – G, HC Vityaz, KHL
23; Calgary’s fourth round pick (96th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 6’3″, 187 pounds
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Season to date | – | – | – |
2023-24 (VHL) | 5 | 271 | .908 |
Chechelev dressed for a couple games as backup with Vityaz’s minor league team in the All-Russian Hockey League, Yunison-Moskva, and he’s also been the third-stringer in the KHL. He has yet to see game action in either league.
Yegor Yegorov – G, HC Tambov, VHL
19; Calgary’s sixth round pick (176th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft; 6’3″, 183 pounds
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Season to date | 2 | 40 | .824 |
2023-24 (MHL) | 25 | 1319 | .917 |
After a pretty strong season in junior last year, Yegorov is playing in second-tier pro in the All-Russian Hockey League. He’s been dressing as the backup for HC Tambov, but has only appeared twice in relief so far.
Kirill Zarubin – G, AKM Tula, MHL
18; Calgary’s third round pick (84th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; 6’3″, 178 pounds; FN’s 19th-ranked prospect 2024
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Season to date | 4 | 203 | .886 |
2023-24 (MHL) | 45 | 2473 | .927 |
Zarubin is in a pretty unique position right now. His team, AKM Tula, is an academy team that develops players to move up the Russian hockey ladder. Their team is young this year and prone to fairly significant defensive lapses, and they’re attempting to rotate through the three goalies they’re keeping on their roster. So far, Zarubin’s been the victim of some small sample sizes (and iffy defensive play in front of him). We’ll see if he can bounce back.
