The Wranglers are easing six players into pro hockey this season

Photo credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports
Every year, the Calgary Flames introduce a bunch of fresh-faced youngsters to the world of pro hockey.
It’s not always easy. And, as they say, progress is almost never linear. 14 games into the AHL season for the Calgary Wranglers, we might as well check in on the six individuals that are getting their first full-time pro reps this season.
Two of them are quite easy:
- Matvei Gridin started the season in the NHL with the Flames on the heels of a fantastic training camp. He scored a goal for the Flames and went to the AHL when Jonathan Huberdeau was medically cleared. Since joining the Wranglers, he’s played in every game and generally been pretty good. His offensive details are very strong, his play away from the puck is a bit uneven but generally perfectly fine.
- Aydar Suniev has played in all 14 games for the Wranglers, and he’s bounced between basically every forward line at this point. When he’s been in the bottom six, he’s looked a bit lost – his checking details aren’t there yet. When he’s been in the top six, most recently, he’s been quite good.
Owen Say has dressed for every Wranglers game, starting five times and working as Ivan Prosvetov’s backup nine times. Say’s performances have been consistently good, aside from a recent game where he gave up five goals, but since Prosvetov is an experienced netminder it makes sense to lean on him a little more than Say.
Carter King has been scratched twice. He’s played primarily in the bottom six, bouncing between the wing and centre, and he’s also killed penalties. He’s been pretty solid, all things considered, but he’s one of the players that could probably do better with a more consistent role.
Andrew Basha has been scratched three times. We’re not entirely sure if it’s performance-based or a bit of load management considering Basha is coming off a pretty significant injury and barely played last season. Similar to Suniev, he’s bounced around the lines a bit, primarily playing with Clark Bishop as his centre.
Etienne Morin has played four games for the Wranglers and two for Rapid City. He’s probably the biggest victim of the Wranglers’ glut of defenders. They carried nine D to start the season, and none of the right side options – Hunter Brzustewicz, Jeremie Poirier and Daniil Miromanov – really seemed like obvious fits for a 20-year-old playing his first games. The Flames had Yan Kuznetsov to provide stability for Brzustewicz as he learned, so that may be the template they’re seeking for Morin.
We’ll see how things play out.
Onto the stats!
