The Wranglers are going through a rough patch (but still getting points)

On Monday afternoon, the Calgary Wranglers lost to the Ontario Reign.
It was the Wranglers’ seventh loss in their past 10 games. However, the Wranglers have managed to pick up points more often than not, with four of their seven losses being past regulation. The Wranglers are 3-3-4 in that span and haven’t won a game since before the AHL’s All-Star Classic earlier in February.
We were curious about what’s causing the challenges, so we dug into the numbers a bit. Here’s what we learned:
- Devin Cooley is on a cold stretch: he has a .924 save percentage this season, but he’s dipped to .891 over the past four games.
- The shooters are also on a cold stretch: season-long the Wranglers are shooting 12.3%, but they’ve scored on 8.3% of their shots over the past four games.
- More broadly-speaking, Henderson and Ontario are veteran-laden, heavier AHL opponents and arguably a tough stylistic match for the Wranglers, who play a pretty fast-paced game. Henderson and Ontario did a good job keeping the Wranglers to the outside.
- The Wranglers’ lineup has gone through some churn, with Ilya Solovyov, Adam Klapka and Dryden Hunt going up and down from the NHL, and some players being absent for injury and developmental reasons.
- The Wranglers’ power play typically scores on 21.8% of their advantages, they were 16.7% during this span. Their penalty kill typically stops 81.9% of opponent advantages, they were 78.6% during these last four games.
In short, the Wranglers are experiencing a perfect storm of challenges. And despite this, they’ve found ways to eke out points here and there. They’re still fourth in the AHL in points and seventh in points percentage.
