The Calgary Flames’ farm club, the Calgary Wranglers, had a mixed bag over the past seven days.
The Wranglers played three games – once against the Manitoba Moose and twice against the Abbotsford Canucks – and went 1-1-1. They allowed five goals. They scored five goals. (The shootout was the difference in their third game.) Only two players on the roster – blueliner Jonathan Aspirot and forward William Strömgren – registered more than a point this week, and the club’s production has been skewed towards special teams lately.
The Wranglers are the victims of their own success… and the injury bug. Their blueline group is missing three regulars right now – Mark Pysyk, Jeremie Poirier and Ilya Solovyov – while Jordan Oesterle and Nick DeSimone went to the NHL. (DeSimone was later claimed off waivers by New Jersey.) Their forward group has missed a slew of veterans at various times – Brett Sutter and Dryden Hunt just retired before Hunt was called up to the Flames – and as a result their group’s lacked continuity at various times.
Such is life in the AHL when your parent club is going through changes. Your best up-and-comers will get called up to the NHL, and you’ll have to keep moving players up the rotation and hope they can succeed in bigger roles. (Case in point: Strömgren seems to be taking a step.)
Let’s dive into this week’s prospect update.

Bell’s been a model of consistency for the Americans this year. He wears a letter. He plays centre and the wing. He wins face-offs. He’s one off the team lead for goals. He’s been exactly what Tri-City needed him to be this season.
