The Wranglers had a busy, weird week (and other Flames prospect notes)

In last week’s prospect update, we outlined the changes that the Calgary Wranglers have endured lately. We won’t belabour the point, but they’re without their head coach, their star goalie and their leading scorer – three pieces that aren’t easy to replace.
Since losing all three of those pieces, they’ve played six games over the past 10 days. They’ve somehow gone 4-2-0, with backup goalie Waltteri Ignatjew and ECHL call-up Connor Murphy rotating in net and the Wranglers operating in a bit of a different environment. They played four games this past week, winning three of them.
When you have Devin Cooley in net, you can afford to take chances to generate offence because you have the AHL’s best goaltender to bail you out if you make a mistake. When you don’t have Cooley, the margin for error is a bit thinner. The Wranglers have had two losses where things got away from them in a hurry and they lost by a combined score of 13-3.
But they’ve also experienced some nice offensive output from across their lineup in four wins where they’ve won a few track meets by a combined 20-14 score.
Right now the Wranglers have five players in the top 30 of the AHL in points: Dryden Hunt (second), Kerins (eighth), Clark Bishop (13th), Martin Frk (23rd) and William Strömgren (27th). Among the top 30 of AHL defencemen in points are Jeremie Poirier (12th), Ilya Solovyov (15th) and Jonathan Aspirot (20th). They’re without some key pieces, but they still have good players across the age spectrum.
This is the Wranglers riding out the storm. Cooley should be back before you know it.
