Semi-final Saturday has come and gone at the 2023 IIHF men’s World Championships! Three Calgary Flames players have advanced to the gold medal game on Sunday, while one other will instead play for bronze.

In the first semi-final game, Canada beat Latvia by a 4-2 score. Milan Lucic set up Adam Fantilli’s game-winning goal in the third period. Sammy Blais, Jack Quinn and Scott Laughton had the other Canada goals.

MacKenzie Weegar played a team-leading 26:48 and was plus-1. Tyler Toffoli was minus-1 in 14:13. Lucic was plus-1 (with his assist) in a team-low 8:57. Calgary Wranglers blueliner Kristians Rubins, who joined Team Latvia late, was minus-2 in 18:41.

In the second semi-final game, Germany beat the United States by a 4-3 score in overtime. The American goals were scored by Alex Tuch, Rocco Grimaldi and Mikey Essimont. Germany’s Marcel Noebels tied the game late in the third with Germany’s goaltender pulled, then Frederik Tiffels scored 7:32 into extra time to advance.

Matt Coronato was minus-1 and went 1-for-3 at the face-off dot in 16:36.

The United States will play Latvia for the bronze medal on Sunday at 6:20 a.m. MT. Canada will play Germany for the gold medal at 11:20 a.m. MT. So there’s a chance that all four Flames that headed to the Worlds will come home with medals.
