This week in 2013 (Sept. 20), the Calgary Flames named Mark Giordano the 15th captain in franchise history.

Giordano, 30 at the time, had a breakout season in his first campaign with the C scoring 14 goals and 47 points, both career highs at the time. And like a fine wine, Giordano began to age.

Since his appointment as captain his offensive game has flourished as a point producer scoring 93 goals and 333 points in the 508 games since. A true leader in the community, he was awarded the Mark Messier leadership award this past season. Giordano was a finalist for the leadership award last year and was awarded the NHL Foundation Player award in 2016.

In 2018-19, Giordano was award the James Norris trophy as the league’s top defenceman.

He joined the Calgary Flames in July 2004 after going undrafted. He wasn’t the only other player signed that day as the team picked up Patrik Nilson, Richie Regehr, Dustin Johner, Justin Taylor, Davin Heintz and Carsen Germyn.

Giordano was clearly the only one of the bunch to actually stick around.
