On this day in 1989, Calgary Flames forward Joe Mullen scored his 110th point of the season setting a new record for points in a season by a U.S. born player.

Mullen, 31, had a one-goal, two-assist night in a 4-2 Flames win over the Edmonton Oilers. Mullen broke a record previously held by Jimmy Carson, who had 107 points the previous year.

Mullen’s record was broken by Brett Hull in 1990-91 when he scored 86 goals and 131 points with the St. Louis Blues.

Originally acquired by the Flames on Feb. 1, 1986, when the Flames sent Eddy Beers, Charlie Bourgeois and Gino Cavallini for Mullen, Terry Johnson and Rik Wilson.

Mullen was eventually moved by the Flames at the 1990 draft in exchange for Pittsburgh’s second-round pick who Calgary used on D Nicolas Perreault who never played an NHL game.

In 345 games with the Flames, Mullen tallied 190 goals and 388 points in the regular season, and another 55 points in 61 playoff games.
