The Calgary Flames made a roster move on Friday morning and provided an update on TJ Brodie’s condition following his episode at Thursday’s practice. The gist of it is that Brodie’s doing well and undergoing some tests. With no timetable for his return, the club has recalled Oliver Kylington from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.

In terms of Brodie’s condition, team physician Dr. Ian Auld declined to provide specifics due to the obvious privacy implications but noted that several serious issues have been ruled out. Brodie will undergo “days” of testing, at which point it seems probable that a more definitive timeline for his return to action will likely be made. Flames general manager Brad Treliving commended the team’s medical staff for their quick work.

In the interim, welcome back to Kylington. The defender had a hat trick over the weekend for Stockton and was the most likely player to come back up given the circumstances. To provide cap space for the recall, the Flames placed Juuso Valimaki on the long term injury reserve. The gist of that is with both Valimaki and Austin Czarnik on LTIR, the club can go over the cap by up to $2.144 million without facing penalty from the league. The move means that Valimaki will be required to miss at least another 10 games and 24 days, so the earliest he can return to action is Dec. 10. That said, he’ll definitely be out longer than that so this move really doesn’t restrict the club in any real way.

It sure sounds like Brodie is going to be okay. While the situation at the rink on Thursday was extremely scary, it could have been much scarier.

The Flames return to action this weekend for back-to-back games Saturday in Arizona and Sunday in Vegas.
