Despite all the festiveness around the hockey world – jointly celebrating Thanksgiving Monday and Columbus Day – the American Hockey League has dropped the proverbial hammer on Adirondack Flames forward Trevor Gillies for his antics on October 10.

Gillies has been officially suspended for 12 games for slamming William Carrier’s noggin into the ice – presumably so he could feast on the goo inside, because there wasn’t any real tactical reason for engaging him – in the late stages of Adirondack’s loss to Rochester on Friday.

He was given a five-minute penalty for fighting, two for instigating, an automatic game misconduct for an instigator in the last five minutes of a game, and an additional game misconduct for being the aggressor in the altercation. Overall, he was penalized for 27 minutes for the incident, as well as received an automatic one-game suspension for the instigator penalty late in the game. Carrier received zero penalties, as he basically just got mugged.

Gillies will be eligible to return to the Baby Flames line-up on November 15, at which point he’ll have missed the first 13 of Adirondack’s 14 games due to suspension. He’s been previously suspended in 2011 (nine games for a head-shot on Eric Tangradi and 10 games for another incident involving Cal Clutterbuck). He was also suspended in Finland last season for sucker-punching Jarkko Ruutu.
