In the history of the Calgary Flames franchise, there are plenty of players that have come and gone from the organization. But few have bounced around as frequently in such a short period of time as Brandon Prust.
A homegrown draft selection, Prust worked his way onto the NHL roster, only to be traded three times during an 11 month span. As we await the official return of former Flames forward Ryan Lomberg – and his addition to the roster of two-time Flames – let’s delve into Prust’s wacky run with the club.

Arrival #1: 2004 NHL Draft

A product of the London Knights, Prust impressed in junior despite never scoring all that much. He never generated offence at more than a point-per-game pace in junior, but his physical brand of hockey earned him admirers in the scouting community. He was a tornado on the ice, and that contributed to him being selected in the third round, 70th overall, in the 2004 NHL Draft.
Prust spent parts of three seasons playing pro hockey in the Flames system… and he was exactly what he was in junior. He established himself as a really solid AHLer during his first three seasons, but never scored at anything close to a point-per-game pace: his peak was 37 points in 79 games in 2007-08
He broke through onto the Flames’ roster full-time in 2008-09 but he battled injuries and didn’t finish the season with the team. He had two points in 25 games… and plenty of penalty minutes.

Departure #1: A trade with Phoenix

On Mar. 3, 2009, a day before the trade deadline, the Flames made a big trade, sending Prust, Matthew Lombardi and their 2010 first-round pick to Phoenix in exchange for Olli Jokinen and a 2009 third-round pick.
Prust played just 11 games with the Coyotes before the season ended. That was his entire run in the desert.

Arrival #2: Another trade with Phoenix

On Jun. 27, 2009, on the second day of the 2009 NHL Draft and just shy of four months after he was traded to the Coyotes, the Flames reacquired Prust. This time, they sent Jim Vandermeer to Phoenix to land him: the trade was one for one.
Prust spent most of the season with the Flames, racking up five points (and many penalty minutes) over 43 games… before he was traded away by the Flames again.

Departure #2: A trade with the NY Rangers

On Feb. 1, 2010, the Flames were involved in a trade featuring Prust and Jokinen for the second time in less than a year. This time, instead of Prust being traded for Jokinen, they were packaged together and sent to the New York Rangers in exchange for Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins.
Prust finished out the season with the Rangers and spent parts of the next six seasons in the NHL, spending time with the Rangers, Montreal and Vancouver before eventually hanging up his skates. The Flames ended up having to package a second-round pick to get rid of Kotalik’s contract a couple years later. Whoops.
