For a lot of folks that follow the Calgary Flames and their history, there are often players that seem like they were with the organization forever, despite their tenures with the franchise being rather short.
For whatever reason, it felt like Jamie Lundmark was a Flame for a long, long time. Truth be told, Lundmark played fewer than 300 games in the National Hockey League, but roughly a third of them were played in a Flames jersey.
As we commemorate the return of Ryan Lomberg to the Flames for his second tour of duty, let’s look back on Lundmark’s two stints!
Arrival #1: Trade with Phoenix
A first-round selection by the New York Rangers in 1999, Lundmark began his pro career in 2001-02 and after a full season in the AHL with Hartford, he began pushing for NHL duty. He spent much of the next two seasons with the Blueshirts – 111 combined games in 2002-03 and 2003-04 – but his upward movement was stalled somewhat by the 2004-05 lockout.
When the lockout ended, there wasn’t a clear role for Lundmark with the Rangers and he was traded to Phoenix a week into the season for Jeff Taffe. His tenure with the Coyotes wasn’t horribly long, though, as he was traded to the Flames prior to the 2006 trade deadline in exchange for a 2006 fourth-round pick.
In the Flames portion of 2005-06, Lundmark had 10 points over 12 games and looked like a bargain. His 2006-07 season wasn’t nearly as productive. He posted four points over 39 games before his first Flames tenure ended.
Departure #1: Trade with Los Angeles
Midway through the 2006-07 season, the Flames packaged Lundmark, a 2007 fourth-round pick and a 2008 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Kings for obscure centre Craig Conroy. Conroy, a former Flames captain and a huge part of the team’s 2004 Stanley Cup run, had left as a free agent in a move everybody involved probably looks back on curiously.
Conroy returned to the Flames via that January 2007 trade and has never left. He’s currently the general manager.
Lundmark, meanwhile, finished out 2006-07 with the Kings and then bounced between the KHL (Dynamo Moskva) and AHL (Lake Erie) in 2007-08.
Arrival #2: Signed as a free agent
After his odd 2007-08, Lundmark opted to rejoin the Flames as a free agent. He spent the better part of two seasons with the organization, bouncing between the Flames and the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat. He posted 25 points in 48 games across two seasons, but couldn’t carve out a full-time niche for himself and so he kept yo-yoing between the NHL and the minors.
Departure #2: Claimed on waivers
Midway through the 2009-10 season, during his yo-yoing, Lundmark was claimed off the waiver wire by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He joined the Leafs and posted three points across 15 games.
Lundmark became a free agent after that season and after a stint with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, he headed to Europe. He had stints with Timrå IK (in Sweden’s Elitserien) and Dynamo Riga (in the KHL) before landing in Austria with EC-KAC in 2012-13. He ended up playing six seasons in Austria before retiring following the 2017-18 season.
Since retiring from playing hockey, Lundmark’s stayed involved. He founded a training centre in the Philadelphia area devoted to developing elite hockey players, and he’s also served in coaching roles with both the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers organization and Princeton University’s women’s team.
