Two-time Flames: Steve Konroyd had a strong first act (and a very short return engagement)

When you look at the illustrious history of two-time members of the Calgary Flames, there are a few trends that emerge.
One of the odder trends is that most of the time, a player’s first run with the Flames is way longer than their second stint. And no player encapsulates that trend quite as well as blueliner Steve Konroyd.
As we await the re-debut of Stanley Cup champion Ryan Lomberg, who’ll join this elite group, let’s look at the history of another two-time member of the Flames.
Arrival #1: 1980 second-round pick
The Flames selected Konroyd out of the Ontario Hockey League in the 1980 NHL Draft. He was the fourth player the club selected after they relocated from Atlanta the month before, and they received the pick they used on him when they traded Miracle On Ice goaltender Jim Craig to the Boston Bruins the week before the draft. (For trivia honks, in that trade they also received the 1981 draft choice that became Mike Vernon.)
After a brief appetizer of four games the season after being selected, Konroyd became an NHL regular as a 20-year-old in 1981-82 and quickly became a fixture on the Flames’ blueline. Konroyd wasn’t an offensive powerhouse, but he was a really useful, reliable player that could be used in all sorts of situations. He played nearly five full seasons in Calgary, with his offensive peak being 27 points in 59 games during the 1985-86 season.
Well, the first two-thirds of the 1985-86 season, at least…
Departure #1: Trade with New York Islanders
The Flames looked like they might be able to be a good playoff team in 1986 – and perhaps get past Vancouver or Edmonton and make a long run – and so general manager Cliff Fletcher was looking to shore up some perceived weak spots on his team. As a result, he made a move prior to the 1986 trade deadline, adding New York Islanders veteran John Tonelli – at the time a four-time Stanley Cup champion, Selke Trophy finalist and former Canada Cup MVP – in exchange for Richard Kromm and Konroyd.
The Flames ended up going all the way to the Stanley Cup Final that year, while Konroyd bounced around a bit after that. He spent parts of three seasons on Long Island, parts of four seasons in Chicago, two partial seasons in Hartford, and shorter stints in Detroit and Ottawa. He was always good enough to be a fixture, but was traded frequently by teams looking to upgrade on the back end, and injuries eventually slowed him down and limited his effectiveness.
He was bought out by Ottawa after the 1993-94 season.
Arrival #2: Signed as free agent
Konroyd spent the 1994-95 season with the International Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves – he had family ties to Chicago so it was a good fit. The Flames signed him to an NHL deal prior to the 1995 trade deadline, as they looked to add depth for a playoff run – this was the year they also lured Jim Peplinski out of retirement at the trade deadline to add depth.
He played just one game in the regular season and didn’t make any appearances in the playoffs.
Departure #2: Left as a free agent (and then retired)
Konroyd never got another NHL opportunity after that. He opted to retire shortly after the end of the season, but quickly got into broadcasting. He’s been been part of NHL television coverage for various teams – including Phoenix, San Jose, Columbus and Chicago – since 1996.
