A trio of Calgary Flames players are headed to scenic Latvia to represent Canada at the 2023 IIHF men’s World Championships. Per TSN’s Darren Dreger, Tyler Toffoli, Milan Lucic and MacKenzie Weegar are going to suit up for Canada.
The 31-year-old Toffoli is coming off his best offensive season in the NHL, posting 34 goals and 73 points this past campaign with the Flames. He’s previously played at the 2015 Worlds for Canada, where he captured gold.
The 34-year-old Lucic is a pending unrestricted free agent who had been skating with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers lately. I guess we know why he was doing that. Lucic had seven goals and 19 points this past season. He’s never represented Canada at a major IIHF tournament.
The 29-year-old Weegar had a tremendous defensive season, and posted four goals and 31 points in his first season with the Flames. He’s also making his first appearance with Team Canada, though he played for Canada East at the World Junior-A Championships in 2011-12.
The 2023 IIHF men’s World Championships runs May 12-28 in Riga, Latvia and Tampere, Finland.
