The Calgary Flames are sending three players to the IIHF men&#8217;s World Championships as part of team Canada. All three of those players will be part of Canada&#8217;s leadership group. On Tuesday, it was announced that Tyler Toffoli will serve as Canada&#8217;s captain, with Milan Lucic and MacKenzie Weegar among the team&#8217;s four alternate captains.

The 2023 event is Toffoli&#8217;s second time representing Canada at the Worlds, following a 2015 appearance when he helped them capture a gold medal. It&#8217;s the first time for both Lucic and Weegar at the event. And yes, it&#8217;s fairly appropriate that Toffoli, who wears a giant Flaming C with his NHL team, will wear the C for Canada at this event.
The Flames will also be represented at the tournament by Matt Coronato, playing for the United States in Group A (based in Tampere, Finland).
Canada is based in Group B, with their games being played in Riga, Latvia. Joining them in Group B for the round robin stage are Czechia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Latvia, Norway, Kazakhstan and Slovenia. The top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals and are re-seeded, at which point crossover play with Group A begins. The round robin is scheduled for May 12-23, with the medal round (quarterfinals, semi-finals and final) going from May 25-28.
