The Calgary Flames are sending three players to the IIHF men’s World Championships as part of team Canada. All three of those players will be part of Canada’s leadership group. On Tuesday, it was announced that Tyler Toffoli will serve as Canada’s captain, with Milan Lucic and MacKenzie Weegar among the team’s four alternate captains.
The 2023 event is Toffoli’s second time representing Canada at the Worlds, following a 2015 appearance when he helped them capture a gold medal. It’s the first time for both Lucic and Weegar at the event. And yes, it’s fairly appropriate that Toffoli, who wears a giant Flaming C with his NHL team, will wear the C for Canada at this event.
The Flames will also be represented at the tournament by Matt Coronato, playing for the United States in Group A (based in Tampere, Finland).
Canada is based in Group B, with their games being played in Riga, Latvia. Joining them in Group B for the round robin stage are Czechia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Latvia, Norway, Kazakhstan and Slovenia. The top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals and are re-seeded, at which point crossover play with Group A begins. The round robin is scheduled for May 12-23, with the medal round (quarterfinals, semi-finals and final) going from May 25-28.
