How fitting is it that Tyson Barrie’s first point as a Calgary Flame came against his former team?
About four and a half minutes into the second period, the Flames cut the Edmonton Oilers’ lead in half thanks to a goal from Anthony Mantha off a deflection on Barrie’s point shot. It featured a lengthy delay due to a potential high stick, but when it was all said, Barrie picked up his first point as a Flame.
Barrie was selected in the third round of the 2009 draft by the Colorado Avalanche. The right-shot defenceman spent eight seasons with the Avalanche, where he scored 75 goals and 307 points in 484 games. After a season with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he scored five goals and 39 points in 70 games, Barrie signed a deal with the Oilers.
The 33-year-old played parts of three seasons with the Oilers from the 2020-21 season until the 2023 trade deadline. Overall, he scored 25 goals and 132 points in 190 games, with 11 of those goals and 118 points coming on the man advantage. At the 2023 trade deadline, he was traded to the Nashville Predators along with other assets for Mattias Ekholm.
After being the Predators’ seventh defenceman in 2023-24, he signed a professional tryout with the Flames. He earned a spot with the team out of preseason, but his role with the Flames is similar to his with the Predators in 2023-24. Through the Flames’ first 12 games, the right-shot defenceman has played just five games with a single point.
Barrie is on a one-year deal with a cap hit of $1.25 million. If the Flames end up needing to sell at the 2025 trade deadline (hopefully not), Barrie could be one of the players the Flames move on from as there’ll undoubtedly be a playoff team in need of a power play quarterback.
