On Sunday night at the palatial Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary Flames blueliner Hunter Brzustewicz did something he had hoped to do for years.
He scored a goal in the National Hockey League.
The Flames lost, dropping a 4-3 overtime contest to the Anaheim Ducks, but there was a bit of a silver lining due to the Flames’ improved overall play and Brzustewicz’s goal. (Brzustewicz joked of Adam Klapka’s post-goal hug that “He picked me up and twirled me around like I was a stringbean.”)
With Brzustewicz’s tally, four different Flames prospects have lit the lamp for the first time during the 2025-26 season. We’ve collected the four first NHL goals here.

Matvei Gridin

Date: Oct. 8, 2025 at Rogers Place against the Edmonton Oilers
Time: 12:50 into second period
Games into NHL career: 1
With the Flames trailing 3-0 in their opening game against Edmonton, Gridin was trying to make a play off a rush sequence. He threw the puck into the slot area, intending to pass to Matt Coronato. Instead, the puck hit Noah Philp’s skate and wobbled into the Edmonton net past netminder Stuart Skinner.

Sam Honzek

Date: Oct. 28, 2025 at Scotiabank Arena against the Toronto Maple Leafs
Time: 14:49 into third period
Games into NHL career: 14
The Flames were trailing 3-2 in Toronto and battling to tie the game. The Leafs made an errant pass trying to break out of their own end, which was chased down by Mikael Backlund. Backlund passed to the slot for Honzek, who beat Anthony Stolarz with a quick shot to tie the game.

Yan Kuznetsov

Date: Nov. 28, 2025 at Amerant Bank Arena against the Florida Panthers
Time: 5:35 into first period
Games into NHL career: 13
With the Flames trailing 2-0, Kuznetsov skated the puck through the neutral zone, entered the Florida zone, and fired a wrist shot that beat Florida netminder Daniil Tarasov.

Hunter Brzustewicz

Date: Jan. 25, 2026 at Scotiabank Saddledome against the Anaheim Ducks
Time: 7:56 into first period
Games into NHL career: 18
The Flames were leading 1-0. After the Flames won an offensive zone face-off, Brzustewicz pinched down from the point and attempted to pass to Joel Farabee at the far side of the net. The puck deflected off Anaheim defender Jackson LaCombe’s stick and beat Lukas Dostal inside the far post.
