Folks, we’re getting close to the midway mark of the 2026-27 season and it’s probably about time we start looking to the future a bit. More specifically, which Calgary Flames prospects may be going pro in the 2026-27 season?
If we look to major junior, the Flames have three players in the major junior ranks: OHLer Jacob Battagalia and WHLers Axel Hurtig and Hunter Laing. Battaglia is on an entry-level contract and will be going pro next season. The Flames have until June 1 to sign Laing or they lose his NHL rights. They have another year (until 2027) to make a decision on Hurtig. Both Laing and Hurtig have performed well this season, and we’re suspecting that they’ll be offered pro deals and we’ll see them with the Wranglers in 2026-27.
Then there’s the college crew, who are full of wild cards.
The most likely to sign with the Flames seems to be the 2025 first-rounders, Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter. But in both of those cases, we’re not sure if it would be better for them to play in the AHL or college, so unless there’s a clear path to potentially pushing for NHL time, perhaps they got back for another year. We’ll be honest with you all here: the collegiate aspect to everything is a new wrinkle and we haven’t quite figured out how quickly players will opt to sign pro deals.
It’s gonna be an interesting spring as we start to figure things out.
