Which Flames require waivers to be sent down to the Wranglers?

Friends, the Calgary Flames will soon be conducting more extensive training camp roster cuts as they attempt to get their group down to a manageable number – at a certain point, you need to get down to the NHL (and NHL adjacent) crew and start dialing in on systems and details.
One thing to bear in mind as the Flames go through this process is waivers.
For lack of a better term, for players past a certain age and experience level – generally-speaking, almost everyone who’s completed their entry-level contract – has to be offered up to the rest of the NHL before they can be sent to the American Hockey League. That’s, in a nutshell, the NHL’s waiver system. The in-season waiver period began on Sept. 25.
If a player is claimed, they have to be kept on the claiming team’s roster (and offered up on waivers again before they can be sent down). If a player clears waivers, they’re exempt and can be sent freely between NHL and AHL until they spend 30 days on an NHL roster (or dress for 10 NHL games).

Who is exempt from waivers?

Because they haven’t reached the experience level or age to qualify for waivers, the following 14 players can all be sent directly to the Wranglers without having to go through waivers.
  • Goalies Owen Say and Arsenii Sergeev
  • Defencemen Hunter Brzustewicz, Etienne Morin, Nick Cicek and Artem Grushnikov
  • Forwards Matvei Gridin, Aydar Suniev, William Stromgren, Sam Honzek, Carter King, Andrew Basha, Parker Bell and Lucas Ciona
Zayne Parekh is also waiver exempt, but he can only be sent to the OHL due to his age.

Who requires waivers?

30 different players require waivers to go the AHL, the majority of them being, well, NHL regulars. Several of them are essentially locks to be on the big club’s roster, so we’ll be running through the 13 waiver eligible players that don’t have NHL roster spots locked up.
They are:
  • Goalie Ivan Prosvetov
  • Goalie Devin Cooley
  • Defenceman Jake Bean
  • Defenceman Daniil Miromanov
  • Defenceman Yan Kuznetsov
  • Defenceman Ilya Solovyov
  • Defenceman Jeremie Poirier
  • Forward Adam Klapka
  • Forward Justin Kirkland
  • Forward Sam Morton
  • Forward Rory Kerins
  • Forward Clark Bishop
  • Forward Dryden Hunt
Suffice it to say, to cut their roster down to the required 23 players for opening night, the Flames will need to expose quite a few effective players to the waiver wire. We’ll see how it all plays out.
