A Calgary Flame made his National Team debut on Sunday, while another Flame scored on Monday.
In the last two days, Devin Cooley made his first start of the tournament, while Matt Coronato got on the board for the first time. Team USA played twice, while Team Finland, Team Slovakia, and Team Canada all played once.
Let’s take a look at what happened in Sunday and Monday’s slate of games.
Sunday
There were three Flames in action on Day 3, as Team USA took on Team Great Britain, defeating them 5-1, while Team Slovakia defeated Team Italy 4-1. Other games saw Team Austria beat Team Hungary 4-2, Team Sweden beat Team Denmark 6-2, Team Latvia beat Team Germany 2-0, and Team Norway beat Team Slovenia 4-0.
Team USA vs Team Great Britain
Team USA had an easy time with Team Great Britain, as expected. Paul Cotter opened the scoring with six to go in the first, with Team Great Britain tying it midway through the second period. With three to play, Ike Howard scored for the Americans, which turned out to be the game-winner.
In the third, Mathieu Olivier, Declan Carlile, and Howard all scored, giving Team USA a 5-1 victory. In red, white, and blue debut, Cooley stopped 19 of 20 shots, good enough for a .950 save percentage. Coronato, on the other hand, was a +1 with four shots on game over 15 minutes of ice time.

Team Slovakia vs Team Italy
Martin Pospíšil was in action on Sunday for Team Slovakia, who beat Team Italy 4-1. In the first Marek Hrivík gave the Slovaks a 1-0 lead. Viliam Kmec then scored to give them a 2-0 lead, followed by Kristián Pospíšil’s second of the tournament early in the third period. Once again, it was assisted by Flames’ forward Martin Pospíšil.
After an Italian goal, M. Pospíšil picked up his third assist of the tournament on Oliver Okuliar’s goal, giving Team Slovakia a three-goal lead once again. The Italians didn’t score again, as Team Slovakia moved to 2-0 in the tournament.
Pospíšil picked up those two assists and finished with a shot on net. He totalled just over 15 minutes of ice time and was a +1, while also winning 12 of the 23 draws he took. Solid game for the Flames’ forward.
Monday
There were four games on Monday. Team Czechia defeated Team Sweden 4-3, while Team Switzerland defeated Team Germany 6-1. The other two games, Team Canada against Team Denmark and Team Finland against Team USA, featured Flames’ players.
Team Canada vs Team Denmark
Zach Whitecloud was in action for Team Canada, as they defeated Team Denmark 5-1. The Danes did a great job of staving off the Canadians through the first 40 minutes, but the floodgates opened up in the third.
Just 28 seconds into the final frame, Porter Martone opened the game’s scoring. Then three minutes in, Gabriel Vilardi scored, followed by Denton Mateychuk’s goal just 31 seconds after that. Nick Olesen got the Danes on the board midway through the third, but Team Canada responded less than two minutes later in the form of Ryan O’Reilly’s goal. Then with 29 seconds left, Parker Wotherspoon iced the game.
Whitecloud had a pretty quiet game, finishing as a -1 in his 17:36 minutes of icetime. He is still hunting for his first point of the tournament.
Team Finland vs Team USA
The American’s tough start to their tournament continued, falling 6-2 to Team Finland on Monday. Six minutes into the game, Lenni Hämeenaho opened the scoring for the Finns, but Matt Coronato scored his first of the tournament to even it up shortly after.
After that, it was all the Finns. Patrik Puistola scored midway through the first, with Flames’ defenceman Oli Määttä picking up his first assist of the tournament. Before the end of the first, Aatu Räty scored to extend their lead to two.
Early in the second, Hämeenaho scored his second of the season, before Saku Mäenalanen made it 5-1 for the Finns. Once again, Määttä picked up and assisted. In the third, the Americans got a goal back, but Anton Lundell scored just over three minutes later in what was a 6-2 victory for the Finns.
Coronato didn’t have a great game, finishing as a -1 with two shots on goal in over 15 minutes of action. He also took four faceoffs, going 50%. That doesn’t sound great, but the Americans won just 28.57% of the draws in this game.
As for Määttä, he picked up two assists and was a +2 in over 20 minutes of ice time. Only one other player, his defence partner Nikolas Matinpalo, finished for more ice time for the Finns.
Other notes…
Only one Flames’ player will be in action on Tuesday, as Team Slovakia plays Team Slovenia at 12:20 p.m. MT in Group B action. The other four games see Team Latvia take on Team Austria, Team Italy take on Team Norway, and Team Hungary take on Team Great Britain.
Team USA returns to action on Wednesday, taking on Team Germany. Both Team Canada and Team Finland are out of action until Thursday, as the Canadians play Team Norway and the Finns play Team Latvia, with both games starting at 8:20 a.m. MT.
