On Friday, April 10, Wranglers captain Clark Bishop played in his 500th AHL game. A milestone not many professional players are able to see and one he earned with over half that time spent in Calgary. The 2014 Carolina Hurricanes fifth round draft pick celebrates his AHL career with 201 games with the Charlotte Checkers, 43 games with the Belleville Senators and 256 games with the Calgary Wranglers to date.
Bishop’s career has not just been defined by his time in the AHL. He has gotten a few looks at the NHL level with 53 games between the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators and most recently the Calgary Flames last year. Last year’s call-up included his first NHL goal in over six years.
Including that goal, Clark Bishop has registered a total of two goals and seven assists at the NHL level. In the AHL level, Bishop was a Calder Cup winner with the Charlotte Checkers in the 2018-19 season. His 10-year professional career includes plenty of milestones, including a career season with the Wranglers last year where he put up 19 goals and 19 assists in 66 games.
His teammates and coaches can’t say enough positive things about the Wranglers’ second Captain in team history. The previous Captain, current Head and Coach and former linemate of Bishop shared some words on number 19 saying:
“He plays that way every night. He practices that way every day. He’s a leader for us. He’s a good role model. At the rink and away from it. He’s a good husband, good father, good family man, good friend. He’s a good guy for those young kids to look up to.”
The 500th game landed at home and Bishop was able to celebrate with his wife, daughter and parents to take on the Abbotsford Canucks at the Scotiabank Saddledome. This game came with more than just the milestone puck as Bishop led the way in production in this game starting with the game’s opening goal. Bishop ended up scoring another in this game and assisted on David Silye’s goal for his third point of the night.
David Silye talked about being along for the ride for this commemorative game with the Captain and said:
“500 games is no small feat right? It’s pretty impressive. I played 100 and I’m like holy, it puts it into perspective. He’s great. He’s been a great leader. He’s been around a lot so I enjoy playing with him and he’s a great guy overall.”
Silye continued:
“It was fun. It was fun to see him get two and to get three it would’ve been nice to get the pass back for the hat trick but I’ll take the goal. It’s been good. Bish works hard in how he plays and Ott’s (Brennan Othmann) too on that line complements that well. So it’s been fun playing with them and getting in the flow. It’s been a few games now so hopefully we keep finding our groove.”
The only thing missing from this game was the win. The Wranglers held a lead for the majority of the game but unfortunately lost it in the last couple of minutes of regulation. Despite this, Clark still recognized the positives in this game. Bishop reflected post-game and said:
“It’s a great milestone. Pretty proud of it. Glad my parents were here in attendance to see it and put in a couple of goals for them.”
Bishop has been in Calgary since the Wranglers’ inaugural season in 2022-23 season and was named captain in the 2024-25 season after Brett Sutter announced his retirement from playing. The city holds a special place in Bishop’s heart, with many memories here inside and outside of hockey. Bishop said:
“Getting older, growing older. Half my games or over half my games have been here in Calgary. We had our daughter here in Calgary so it’s a pretty special place.”
In Clark Bishop’s entire AHL career to date, he’s put up 184 total points, consisting of 79 goals and 105 assists. Of those point totals, 53 goals and 55 assists have been with the Wranglers.
