Calgary Wranglers defenceman Jarred Tinordi will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after undergoing surgery to address a lower-body injury, the club announced Saturday evening.
Tinordi, 33, has skated in 30 games with the Wranglers this season, collecting one goal, five points, and 30 penalty minutes. The Flames originally signed Tinordi on Sept. 10, 2024, bringing him in on a one-year, two-way contract worth $800,000 in the NHL.
Tinordi last suited up for the Wranglers against the Ontario Reign on Feb. 15. Joni Jurmo drew into the lineup in Tinordi’s spot as the Wranglers fell 4-1 to the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Saturday.
The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Tinordi in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. The 6’6″, 230-pound lefty made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in the 2012-13 season but never managed to establish himself as a regular in Montreal.
After parts of four seasons in the Canadiens’ pro ranks, Tinordi was included in a particularly memorable mid-season trade with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. The deal saw the ‘Yotes receive Tinordi and Stefan Fournier in exchange for Victor Bartley and John Scott, the latter of whom was the subject of an active grassroots fan effort to nominate him for that year’s All-Star Game.
From there, Tinordi spent three full seasons in the AHL before returning to the NHL scene as a depth defender with the Nashville Predators in 2019-20. He also made appearances with the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers before finally earning his first full-time NHL gig with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, skating in 96 games with the club.
With Tinordi no longer in the equation for them, the Wranglers will be forced to rely more heavily upon the likes of Yan Kuznetsov and Artem Grushnikov to finish the season. It could also potentially dissuade the Flames from recalling any more defencemen unless absolutely necessary, especially with Ilya Solovyov already in the NHL.
Tyson Barrie’s imminent arrival should help the Wranglers remain relatively stable as they enter the final leg of the 2024-25 season. With the top spot in the Pacific Division still within reach, the Wranglers will return to action in Ontario on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. PT.
