The Calgary Wranglers will be without one of their alternate captains for the remainder of the month. On Friday, the American Hockey League announced that forward Alex Gallant has been levied a six game suspension for his actions in Wednesday’s Wranglers win over the Tucson Roadrunners.
Per the league’s release, “Gallant was suspended under the provision of AHL Rule 70.10 after leaving the players’ bench to start an altercation.” He’ll be eligible to return on Feb. 1 when the Wranglers face the Abbotsford Canucks.
The incident that led to the suspension took place at the 16:08 mark of the first period. Tucson forward Ryan McGregor was pursuing Wranglers forward William Strömgren as both entered the Tucson zone from the neutral zone. McGregor lost his footing and fell into Strömgren’s feet, causing Strömgren to lose his balance as Tucson blueliner Montana Onyebuchi collided with him. Strömgren took the brunt of it and headed off the ice gingerly, though he remained in the game.
Gallant, having seen one of his team’s best offensive players take a big hit, jumped onto the ice as part of a regular line change… and made a beeline right for Onyebuchi.
At the time, both players received fighting majors and nobody seemed to think much else of it. But evidently the league reviewed the incident and decided to levy some supplemental discipline.
It’s the third suspension for Gallant over the past three seasons – he was suspended for three games at the end of the 2022-23 regular season for charging and four games in 2023-24 for cross-checking. The 32-year-old Gallant is in his sixth season with the Flames organization, all on AHL contracts, and he’s served as a depth forward and physical presence over the years. He has one assist and 43 penalty minutes over 19 games this season.
The Wranglers have been dressing 11 forwards and seven defencemen lately, and Gallant’s suspension means that the club will be down to 11 forwards, eight defencemen and two goaltenders likely available for this weekend’s set of games in San Diego. We wouldn’t be surprised if they called up an additional player from Rapid City of the ECHL as a precaution. Update: The Wranglers have added forward Brett Davis from Rapid City on a professional tryout agreement.
