The Calgary Wranglers continue on their California road trip this week with a stop in San Diego on Saturday to face the Gulls for the first time this season. Both sides are coming off a loss earlier this week with Calgary falling to Bakersfield 5-2 on Tuesday and San Diego falling to Coachella Valley in overtime on Friday. The Wranglers look to get back on the winning side of things before they move on to their next city on Sunday.

Game at a glance
Former Flames prospect Matthew Phillips is on the other side of this competition and has jumped around teams since leaving the Calgary system. He went from the Wranglers, to winning a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears, to the Colorado Eagles and now to the San Diego Gulls. Also in that time, he played in 31 NHL games, all in the 2023-24 season. Now, he is averaging over a point per game with the Gulls, is top five in the league in assists and matches Dryden Hunt for points.
On the Wranglers’ side, it feels like William Stromgren is finding his goal game again. He’s played very well this season but more in a set up role. He continues to be consistent in his point production and scored his first goal of the season in a four point game against the Henderson Silver Knights on Nov. 15. On Tuesday, he scored again off a breakaway against the Condors. With a bit of line shifting, he seems to be finding different roles depending on who he is joined with on a line.
Another Wrangler that continues to stand out is Martin Frk. Frk also had a four point game on the Nov. 15 game and two points in their last game earlier this week. He now has seven points in his last four games and has earned a top line promotion with Dryden Hunt and Sam Morton unavailable to the Wranglers while they are with the Flames. Frk has been contributing all season, but his multi point games have been coming together more in the last handful of games.
This will be a brief meeting with the Anaheim Ducks’ affiliate, with the game getting started on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. MT. They’ll play a typical two game series in Calgary about a month from now. To catch this game, you can stream it for a fee on Flo Hockey. FlamesNation contributors Ryan Pike and I will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
