The Calgary Wranglers caught the Gulls on the back half of a back-to-back on Saturday. The Gulls were slow to start and had pockets of time through the game where they could not keep up with a fresher Calgary team. The Wranglers kept things together for a full 60 minutes and rightfully earned a 3-2 win.

Lineup notes

Prior to the game, it was announced by the team that William Stromgren would be out of the lineup with a lower body injury. The good news is his status is listed as day to day, as Stromgren has been the go-to set up guy on the top line and has had goals in two of his last three games.
This probably led to the transaction from earlier in the day, where Carter Wilkie got the call-up from Rapid City. Changes from earlier in this week included Lucas Ciona and Artem Grushnikov coming back into the lineup and Etienne Morin coming out.

Wranglers lines

Ivan Prosvetov

Game at a glance

The Wranglers went with Ivan Prosvetov in net and the Gulls started Vyacheslav Buteyets. Calgary had more of a jump to start this game but it was the home team who struck first. At 4:02, Yegor Sidorov made his way around a line of three Wranglers and elevated a shot past Prosvetov. This was the Gulls’ first shot of the game.
The Wranglers took a few minutes to get their jump back and at 12:18, Martin Frk tied this game up. Matvei Gridin went for the shot initially and while he was trying for the rebound, he took a stick to the face. Rory Kerins managed to pick up the puck and get it to Frk to finish the play. Frk’s celebration was brief as he went over to the corner to check on Gridin.
Gridin ended up needing some repairs after this play and in his place, Aydar Suniev was bumped up to the top line. Shortly after Frk’s goal, the Gulls took the first penalty of the game and within less than a minute, the Wranglers pulled ahead on the man advantage. Justin Kirkland finished off a passing play set up by Martin Frk and Rory Kerins.
At 17:49, Alex Gallant and Travis Howe dropped the gloves at center ice. These two fought twice last season and exchanged punches for almost a minute. Howe finished with a bloody jersey and gestured to the crowd with his tongue out as he left the ice.
By the end of the eventful first period, Calgary had a 2-1 lead and a 15-7 edge in shots. For the second period, Matvei Gridin returned with a bubble on. The Gulls came out with some life in but the Wranglers still lit the lamp next. At 5:28, Matvei Gridin buried Turner Ottenbreit’s rebound to make it a 3-1 game. Martin Frk picked up his third point of the game with the assist on this marker.
The Gulls exploded in shots after this goal and you could see the frustration coming from the home team and Prosvetov continued to turn them away. Alex Gallant continued to get under their skin and had another lengthy chat with Travis Howe.
At the end of the second period, the Wranglers led the Gulls 3-1 despite being outshot 17-6 in the middle frame. Early in the third, Martin Frk took a penalty and Calgary managed to kill it off without any shots against. About four minutes into the period, Carter King was taken down from behind along to the boards and Lucas Ciona came to his defence.
This made things a bit scrappier with Alex Gallant and Clark Bishop exchanging some words with the home team. San Diego couldn’t get much going for them and with 7:25 to go in the third period, they had two guys in the box. The Wranglers called a timeout to strategize for the 40 seconds of five on three hockey but the Gulls managed to kill both of them off.
At 17:04, Rory Kerins was called for holding and the Gulls used this to pull their goalie and push to get back in this game. They went out for the six on four and with a second left in the power play, managed to get one back.
No other pucks crossed the line on either side for the rest of the game and Calgary picked up a 3-2 win. Shots finished 32-25 for San Diego and all three stars went to Wranglers. Martin Frk got the first, Matvei Gridin got the second and Rory Kerins got the third.

Scoring stat summary

Turner Ottenbreit – 1A
Rory Kerins – 2A
Matvei Gridin – 1G, 1A
Justin Kirkland – 1G
Martin Frk – 1G, 2A
