The Calgary Wranglers were hungry for a win and came out with something to prove on Wednesday. It was their last home game before a 10 game road trip and they were motivated to get the win right off the first puck drop. Captain, Clark Bishop set the tone early with a fight and an impressive shorthanded goal. That combined with a full team effort earned Calgary a 3-2 win over Ontario.

Lineup notes

The Flames made a few moves on Wednesday that had a trickle down effect to the Wranglers. Daniil Miromanov was reassigned to the AHL and got into this game against Ontario. Justin Kirkland was also put on waivers but his assignment to the Wranglers won’t be confirmed until he clears (if he clears).
On the Wranglers side, the biggest absence was Rory Kerins. While not officially announced by game time, the move with Kirkland hints he’s the next AHLer to try some time up at the NHL. Minor changes from Tuesday’s game included Lucas Ciona coming out and Alex Gallant and David Silye coming in. For the defenders, Turner Ottenbreit and Jeremie Poirier came out and Simon Mack came in.

Game at a glance

Ivan Prosvetov got the start in this game and initially Erik Portillo was in net for the Reign but had to leave early in the first due to an apparent injury. Phoenix Copley needed to go the distance after playing the whole game for Ontario in the night previous.
Clark Bishop fired things up early in this game with a centre ice fight against Taylor Ward just 1:23 into the game.
About a minute and a half after this fight, David Silye took a shot on Portillo that went straight into his pads and he couldn’t get up after the fact. The training staff came out and that’s when the Reign were forced to make a goaltending change.
At 3:54, Martin Frk joined Clark Bishop in the box, but it was to serve a bench minor penalty for too many men. After this penalty and the fighting majors expired, the period was pretty back and forth but it would be the Wranglers who drew first blood. At 17:02, Ivan Prosvetov went off for the delayed penalty call and Martin Frk came on the ice for the extra attacker.
Carter King and Dryden Hunt helped set up a one-timer on the doorstep that Copley had no chance of stopping. This goal came at 17:19.
There were no more shots in the period and the Wranglers went off for the first intermission up 1-0 and ahead 10-8 in shots. Calgary continued their momentum into the second period and at 7:57, Matvei Gridin got caught up in a crowd when he got tied up with a Reign skater, tripped him and was pretty much jumped after that sequence of events. He served an offsetting roughing minor and Martin Frk joined him in the box to serve his tripping call.
Early in this penalty kill, Bishop managed to turn this situation into a positive with a beautiful breakaway goal that David Silye set him up for at 8:13.
Silye said post game that he was happy Bishop picked up on what he was trying to do. He said:
“We started to get some chemistry on the PK and he’s a good skater so I just have to lay it out there for him. I was hoping he saw it. It looked like he had his head down there but he picked it up and had a nice bury.”
Later in the period, the Reign used a small window of momentum they had to get one on their side of the board with a toe drag from Akil Thomas at 16:50. Calgary tried to do something again with the special teams at 19:10, pulling Prosvetov for the delayed penalty call but nothing generated before the period came to a close.
At the end of the second period, the Wranglers had a 2-1 lead and outshot Ontario 12-4 in the middle frame. The Reign didn’t make it easy in the third as the Wranglers got on the power play early in the period, then were quickly on a 5-on-3 penalty kill around the five minute mark. They managed to kill this off and prevent any opposing special teams damage.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said about even strength. At 7:10, Jakub Dvorak scored off a rebound in front. Former Flames prospect and longtime Stockton Heat member, Glenn Gawdin took a slashing call and the Wranglers ended up scoring on this power play.
This happened with Hunter Brzustewicz getting the puck up from the blue line to William Stromgren, who set up Aydar Suniev for a snipe from the offensive zone face-off dot at 9:03.
This brought some urgency to the back half of the frame and at 18:21, the Reign pulled their netminder. They weren’t able to get back into this one and the Wranglers successfully snapped their three game losing streak with a 3-2 win.
The three stars all went to Wranglers with Ivan Prosvetov getting the third star, Aydar Suniev getting the second and Clark Bishop getting the first.
Head Coach Brett Sutter was very happy to see the team come together in this game saying:
“I thought everybody bought in tonight, which was great. Almost to a man, we did things right, we played on the right side, we took care of the puck. They were picking each other up on the bench. I think that’s what you need. We’re a younger group surrounded by some good older players and they’re pushing each other in the right direction.”
