The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their weekend series on Saturday night for a NextGen themed game. Mike Vernon was in the building taking in warmups and dropped the ceremonial faceoff prior to the game. Fans had the chance to win collectable Dustin Wolf pins and Matvei Gridin posters were handed out on the way out. It was a good crowd for the Wranglers with some upper-level seating opening up. The first period sure made a statement with 26 minutes of penalty time and all three goals coming on the power play. Calgary battled through the second and was leading for most of the third. A goal with 18 seconds to go robbed the Wranglers of the regulation win and they would go on to lose 6-5 in overtime.

Lineup notes

After suffering a 7-3 loss on Friday night, the Wranglers threw the lines in a blender. Most of the lines were completely different with the exception of four forwards who still played with one of their linemates. The defensive pairings were completely different. Part of these changes on the lines also brought in Parker Bell on the fourth line and David Silye slotted out in his place.

Wranglers lines

Rory Kerins – Sam Morton – Aydar Suniev
Dryden Hunt – Justin Kirkland – Matvei Gridin
William Stromgren – Clark Bishop – Martin Frk
Parker Bell – Carter King – Lucas Ciona
Nick Cicek – Daniil Miromanov
Turner Ottenbreit – Hunter Brzustewicz
Artem Grushnikov – Gavin White
Ivan Prosvetov

Game at a glance

The Wranglers started Ivan Prosvetov, who came in to relieve Arsenii Sergeev in Friday’s game. The Roadrunners switched things in net with Jaxson Stauber getting the start for the visitors. Just 46 seconds into the game, Clark Bishop and a Roadrunners skater lost an edge in the corner behind the Wranglers net and fell to the ice. This resulted in a bit of a weak tripping call against Bishop that put the Calgary penalty killing early.
With just six seconds left in the penalty kill, Miko Matikka was wide open in the slot and elevated a shot past Prosvetov. At 3:29, Justin Kirkland took the puck the other way on a partial breakaway and tried a move on Stauber. He was shut down, but it was a solid effort on his part. At 4:27, Parker Bell drew a penalty and Max Szuber went to the box for hooking.
The Wranglers had a good cycle on this power play and got a few looks, but most of them went wide. When the Roadrunners started to get some possession back, Lucas Ciona put up a big hit along the boards, then after the whistle, he and Montana Onyebuchi were chirping each other. They fought the night prior and still seemed to have some bad blood flowing.
Just past the midway mark of the period, the Wranglers were pushing the offensive zone and cycling around a few shots. Hunter Brzustewicz had a few looks from the point and was trying to go for a deflection in front. At 12:43, the Wranglers got another power play opportunity when the Roadrunners were called for a too many men bench minor. Miko Matikka served the call.
At 13:36, the Wranglers evened the scoring with a power play goal of their own when Prosvetov got the puck to Daniil Miromanov for a reset and Miromanov found William Stromgren. Stromgren looked like he’d get tangled up in the middle of a group of Tucson skaters but he skated through them and went the whole way for the goal.
Things continued to get a little chippy in this game and it boiled over at 15:02, when Dryden Hunt put up a hit along the boards, and this sparked a line brawl. Hunt was called for boarding and roughing.
Martin Frk served Hunt’s roughing call, putting five Wranglers in the box. Justin Kirkland and Nick Cicek also got called for roughing. Clark Bishop was called for unsportsmanlike conduct while this play was being reviewed. The Roadrunners had three in the box for roughing and one for unsportsmanlike conduct. All these calls put four Roadrunners in their side of the box and five on the Wranglers’ side.
At 16:26, Kevin Rooney beat Prosvetov off a shot that went off the post and in to put the Roadrunners up 2-1. The Wranglers had more penalty time to kill off by the last minute of the first when Martin Frk was called for closing hand on puck at 19:19. At the end of the opening frame, the Wranglers trailed 2-1 and outshot their visiting opponents 10-8.
The Wranglers killed off the remaining time in Frk’s penalty then pressed on. At 5:14, Parker Bell was sprung on a breakaway but Stauber denied him. On the next shift, the Roadrunners added to their lead when the Wranglers got burned on a turnover and Ben McCartney chipped a shot over Prosvetov.
Shortly after this goal, the Roadrunners were called for tripping. After this power play expired, Daniil Miromanov put the Wranglers within one with a point shot at 7:46. Aydar Suniev and Martin Frk picked up the helpers.
At 8:34, the Wranglers got another tally with a point shot from Turner Ottenbreit that Carter King deflected in. Parker Bell also picked up the secondary assist and by the midway mark of the period, the Wranglers were right back in it.
About a minute after this goal, Justin Kirkland was called for high-sticking then Matvei Gridin was called for tripping with 29 seconds left in Kirkland’s call. Kirkland’s penalty was killed off then at 13:05, Dryden Hunt took the puck the other way and scored a shorthanded goal to give the Wranglers the lead. This goal was unassisted.
The lead didn’t last long as Jack Ricketts set up Owen Allard for a drop pass one-timer that Ricketts beat Prosvetov blocker side on. This goal came at 14:47. That was the last of the scoring in the middle frame and the Wranglers went into the second intermission tied 4-4. Shots in the second period were 10-9 Tucson.
Early in the third, Carter King almost had his second of the night with a one-timer chance in tight at 3:41. Stauber stopped him but it was inches away from Calgary taking the lead once again. At 6:59, they found the go ahead goal when Sam Morton broke up a pass in the zone and got it up to Rory Kerins, who went bar down with his shot. Kerins had a huge celebration after this goal as his last lamp lighter was Jan. 2 against the same opponent.
At 8:13, the Wranglers got another chance on the man advantage after Tucson was called for delay of game. On this power play, Kerins was struck in the face by a puck that the Roadrunners were attempting to clear. He left the game abruptly for medical attention. Kerins didn’t return to the game, but even if he wanted to, it didn’t seem to make sense to tough it out with a bubble for the last 10 minutes of regulation. The Roadrunners were starting to get desperate for chances and spent much of the last five minutes of the frame in the Wranglers zone.
Matvei Gridin managed a chance the other way at 16:32, but couldn’t quite get it past the opposing netminder. At 17:39, the Roadrunners pulled Stauber for the extra attacker, and at 18:40, they called a timeout. At 18:59, Daniil Miromanov went for the empty net attempt and it ricocheted just off the side of the net. The Wranglers had another chance in the last 30 seconds but the Roadrunners’ skaters played goalie to break up the shot.
With just 18 seconds to go in the third period, the Roadrunners evened up the scoring again with a wraparound goal by Dmitri Simashev. The score was 5-5 at the end of regulation and these teams needed at least overtime.
Matvei Gridin got a shot off early in overtime then was called for hooking 28 seconds in when he was trying to defend a chance going the other way. Around the 90-second mark of overtime, the Roadrunners rang a shot off the post. Then at 2:09, Scott Perunovich sealed the game with a short side shot and power play goal number three for the visitors. Calgary fell 6-5 and shots finished 33-24 for Tucson. Daniil Miromanov cracked the three stars earning the third star of the night for his two point performance.
