The Calgary Wranglers and San Diego Gulls had an eventful Saturday against each other and looked to keep the energy into Sunday. The previous game resulted in a 7-5 win for Calgary and they tried to sweep their visiting opponents to wrap up their weekend. These teams kept things goal for goal all game and into overtime.
Unfortunately, a couple of late penalty calls against Calgary gave the Gulls their window to pick up the win. This overtime game finished with a 5-4 score for San Diego.

Game at a glance

Devin Cooley returned to the net for this game after just over two weeks away from game action recovering from a concussion. On the other end of the ice, former Wrangler Oscar Dansk got the start for the Gulls. The opening effort was mostly one sided favouring San Diego but Cooley slotted right back into his play and turned away any opening shots that came his way.
The first penalty of the game was dealt to the Gulls for high sticking at 7:24. On this man-advantage, the Wranglers were able to get set up in the zone and Tyson Barrie ripped a slap shot that Dansk tried to stop but slipped five hole. As it was sitting on the blue paint, Adam Klapka gave it one last touch to push it past the goal line. Barrie and William Stromgren were credited for the assists on this opening tally.
Less than a minute after this goal, these teams got tangled up behind the Gulls’ net and with fists flying through the error, three roughing calls were handed out. Two to San Diego and one to Lucas Ciona. This next power play did not have the same result as the first one but Devin Cooley did manage to turn away a breakaway attempt on Nikita Nesterenko at 10:07.
Much later in the period, Jan Mysak came into the Wranglers zone and took an angled shot over Cooley’s blocker side that the Wranglers netminder did not get the best read on. It ended up in the back of the net and the Gulls evened up the scoring at 18:39.
The Wranglers got another chance on the power play early in the second period when Carson Meyer was called for tripping at 3:22. Just under a minute into the man advantage, the Wranglers struck again with a goal from Sam Morton. This goal came at 4:17 with assists going to Tyson Barrie and William Stromgren.
The Wranglers were quickly on the penalty kill afterwards when Artem Grushnikov was called for hooking at 5:32. This penalty was successfully killed off but just five seconds after the end of the penalty, the Gulls evened up the scoring once again with a goal from Rodwin Dionicio. Cooley seemed to have blocked the whole side of the net Dionicio was going for but it was just half a second too late. The puck slipped in behind Cooley’s shoulder and into the back of the net at 7:37.
The Gulls followed up with another tally after this at 12:52. Nico Myatovic forced a turnover, passed the puck up to Judd Caulfield, then got the puck back and put his shot bar down on Cooley. This gave the Gulls their first lead of the game. Shortly after this goal, Myatovic was in the box for holding but the Wranglers did not even up the game again on this man advantage.
Instead, this score stood until the end of the period and the Gulls were up 3-2 going into the second intermission. Shots through the second frame were 9-8 San Diego. The third period was all Wranglers to start with seven shots in just over eight minutes. The seventh shot was the equalizing goal from Martin Frk at 8:10. William Stromgren set him up and he finished the play. Hunter Brzustewicz also got a helper on this goal.
The midway mark of this period got really wacky when Tristan Luneau took a shot at 10:10 that looked to hit off the post and out and was waved as no goal by the official. The play continued for nearly another minute before a stoppage came and a goal review was requested. After a lengthy review, it was determined, that the puck went in and was a good goal. The time reset to 9:50 to go in the period and San Diego took a 4-3 lead.
This power play goal didn’t completely shut down the Wranglers as they went for another chance at 13:17. Jeremie Poirier took a shot from the point that rebounded to the stick of Lucas Ciona and he scored on the wraparound. Brett Davis picked up the secondary assist on this goal.
This game was getting down to the final minutes and with just 1:44 to go, Brett Davis got tangled up behind the Wranglers net and ended up tripping up his opponent. This turned into the biggest penalty kill of the game for Calgary. They were able to keep the Gulls at bay down to the final seconds but did make it a stressful one. Regulation finished up with a 4-4 tie and Calgary outshot San Diego 12-6 in the third period.
The Wranglers still had 16 seconds of a penalty to kill off to start overtime and they did succeed. However, they were called for another penalty 1:09 into overtime when Tyson Barrie was tagged for holding. Just 22 seconds into this man advantage, the Gulls called game with a shot that went post and in. The final score was 5-4 San Diego and shots finished 32-38 for the Gulls.
The Wranglers still got three out of a possible four points this weekend and the only Wrangler on the three stars was Lucas Ciona for the third star. Post-game Ciona reflected on his wraparound goal on his former teammate Oscar Dansk. He said,
“There was a lot of saves and goals on Dansker last year for myself, he was a great teammate. It’s nice to score on him and get us a tie game so we could go to overtime there.”
