The Calgary Wranglers started their only series of week on Friday night against the Manitoba Moose for a cross-divisional match-up. The Central Division’s, Moose have had their share of struggles, placed at the bottom of the Division, while the Wranglers remain at the top of the Pacific.
Calgary came into town and delivered quite the beating with a 6-1 final score.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers made a few minor tweaks to the lineup since their last game against the Roadrunners last weekend. Parker Bell re-entered the lineup along with Hunter Brzustewicz. Alex Gallant and Jarred Tinordi were taken out of the lineup for this series opener. The Wranglers skated with a traditional 12 forwards and six defencemen combination.

Game at a glance

To start this game, the goaltending match-up consisted of Devin Cooley for the Wranglers and Kaapo Kahkonen. This changed a little later in the second period but we will get to why that was. The Moose got the first few shifts of zone time then it started to turn the other way around about four minutes in.
Clark Bishop opened up the scoring before this game was five minutes old with a marker at 4:48. Martin Frk set him up with a drop pass and Bishop delivered it home. Jonathan Aspirot also picked up an assist on this opening marker.
The next registered shot on net would be a goal as well with a goal from Parker Bell with just his second tally of the year. Bell scored at 6:06 when he joined Lucas Ciona on the rush and beat Kahkonen.
The Wranglers kept their good start rolling with their first power play just a couple of minutes later. They didn’t extend their lead on this man advantage but did add another goal shortly after it expired. Rory Kerins scored his 14th goal of the season at 11:49 after Jakob Pelletier fed him the puck from behind the net and he scored right on the doorstep.
With a healthy 3-0 lead, the Wranglers pretty well coasted through the rest of the period just killing off one penalty and keeping that same lead by the end of 20 minutes. Shots through the first period were surprisingly 11-6 for the Moose. The Wranglers, on the other hand, scored on half of the shots they put on goal.
On the first shot of the second period, Walker Duehr easily tapped in a rebound and this ended Kahkonen’s night between the pipes. Artem Grushnikov and William Stromgren picked up the helpers on this goal just 1:42 into the period.
Thomas Milic came in relief for his goaltending partner and a bit of frustration showed itself just three minutes into the period. Four skaters got tangled up behind the play and all were called for roughing. This consisted of Lucas Ciona and Ilya Solovyov on Calgary’s side and Tyson Empey and Ashton Sautner on Manitoba’s side.
However, the Wranglers remained in control and didn’t even give up a shot against between that play and their next goal. Parker Bell scored again at 12:16 with a career-high two goal performance. He got in tight to the netminder and the on-ice official originally waved it over but after a review, it was ruled a good goal. Lucas Ciona and Ilya Solovyov assisted on this tally.
Near the end of this period, emotions boiled over again and Jonathan Aspirot and Tyson Empey dropped the gloves at 19:29. He was getting knocked around a bit by two Moose skaters along the boards and stood up for himself. That closed out the period and the Wranglers finished the second ahead 5-0 and didn’t give up a single shot against in the middle frame.
The shotless streak for the Moose continued for the opening minutes of the third and before they could even get the puck on net again, the Wranglers found the back of the net for the sixth time this game. This time the goal-scorer was Martin Frk, who ripped a shot to finish off a smooth passing play on the power play. This goal was at 7:30 and was assisted by Jonathan Aspirot and Hunter Brzustewicz.
The Moose finally got a shot on the board at 8:31 and gave Cooley some action for the first time in nearly half an hour of game minutes. The home team made a better effort in the second half of the period and ended up breaking Cooley’s shutout at 18:04 on the power play. Jonathan Aspirot was called for holding the stick at 16:59 and Nikita Chibrikov scored the lone Moose goal at 18:04.
This game was too far gone to think of pulling the goalie for those last couple of minutes and the Wranglers finished the evening with a 6-1 win. Shots finished 35-22 favouring Calgary. The Wranglers swept the three starts with Parker Bell picking up the first star, Devin Cooley picking up the second and Martin Frk picking up the third.
