The Calgary Wranglers and San Jose Barracuda wrapped up their weekend series with a Sunday evening game. Calgary took the win in game one with a decisive 6-2 victory on Saturday and tried to hang on in this one to secure the sweep. Unfortunately, their perfect away record was broken as they fell to the Barracuda 5-4 in overtime.
The silver lining is they have still yet to lose in regulation on the road so they have that streak to continue.

Lineup notes

Calgary made no changes to the available players for this game but a slight change in leadership was shown in both of these games over the weekend. Rory Kerins was wearing an A on his jersey as an alternate captain against San Jose. The Wranglers have historically rotated alternate captains and with Alex Gallant still out with an injury it makes sense to have a Wranglers rising star wear a letter.

Game at a glance

Being on the back end of a back-to-back, both teams went with their other netminders for this game. Georgi Romano started for San Jose Sharks affiliate and Waltteri Ignatjew made his fifth start of the season in this mid-afternoon game. This game didn’t have the early scoring we saw the previous night and took a good majority of the first period to start the big-time action.
The whistles in the opening half of the frame were very few and the few penalty call was dealt to the Barracuda at 11:55. Shortly after this power play expired, the Wranglers got on the board with an opening goal from Rory Kerins at 14:11. He made a casual zone entrance that didn’t look like much until Adam Klapka took a shot and Kerins netted it with a deflection. Jeremie Poirier also assisted on this marker.
Blink and you would have missed the next goal when David Silye scored goal number two for Calgary at 14:33. Just 22 seconds after Kerins’ marker. Silye scored his first AHL goal on Saturday with an empty netter then scored this goal on a goaltender this following game. Lucas Ciona set him up and he tapped the puck in on the doorstep.
That was the majority of the first period action and by the end of 20 minutes, the Wranglers were up 2-0. Shots in the first period were 12-10 Calgary. In the second period, the scoring got going much earlier and the Barracuda game out of the locker rooms on a mission.
Jimmy Schuldt cut the Wranglers’ lead at 4:48. Lucas Ciona was trying to skate the puck out of the zone but turned it over. By the time Calgary could react, the puck was in the back of the net. They quickly found the equalizing marker just over a minute later with a redirect goal from Filip Bystedt at 6:04.
Calgary struggled for a few minutes to get their momentum back but that changed with a penalty call at 12:16. They used the power play to get the lead back with a power play goal from Rory Kerins for his second goal of the night. He was on a power play unit with Adam Klapka, William Stromgren, Jakob Pelletier and Jeremie Poirier. Jakob Pelletier made some room and William Stromgren fed him a back door pass that he backhanded past Romanov.
This power play was much better than their next one a few minutes later as they gave up a shorthanded goal to even the score up again. Ethan Cardwell and Justin Bailey were left open in the Wranglers’ zone and easily put the one-timer past Ignatjew. This goal came at 17:10.
That was the last of an eventful middle frame and by the end of the period, the score was an even 3-3. San Jose had the edge in shots in that period doubling up the Wranglers 12-6. In the first half of the third, the Wranglers had a pair of penalties to kill off and once they did, they were able to add another marker to their side of the scoreboard.
At 11:33 Adam Klapka scored his fifth goal in the AHL this season with a quick shot off the draw. Sam Honzek and David Silye assisted on this fourth goal of the game.
Calgary just had about half a period to protect their narrow lead but San Jose did not let that be the decision-maker in this game. They pulled their netminder in the last two minutes of regulation and not even 15 seconds later, a deflection off the body of Collin Graf tied the game up at an even four a side.
Regulation came to a close and no winner had been decided yet. In overtime, the Wranglers were only able to get one shot off before Luca Cagnoni scored the game-winning goal at 3:25. He floated a shot over Ignatjew’s shoulder and snapped Calgary’s road winning streak. However, the Wranglers were still able to secure three of a possible four points in this series.
Despite leading for most of the game, the Wranglers could not close out this game with a win. Ignatjew faced 38 shots, stopping 33 of them and Calgary put up 27 shots.
