The Calgary Wranglers played their third out of four games this week on Saturday night. They were hosted by the San Diego Gulls for their fourth meeting of the season and looked to keep the success of the week going. Calgary had the early push in this game and almost lost control of the game when seven goals were scored in the third period.
They forced an overtime and the Wranglers were ultimately the team to walk away with a 6-5 win in overtime.

Lineup notes

With Alex Gallant’s six game suspension, his absence from this game was expected. Also out of the lineup for this match-up was Trevor Janicke. Instead, the fourth liners consisted of Parker Bell and Brett Davis with Jonathan Aspirot rotating in. Davis was added to the roster as a PTO and made his debut against the San Diego Gulls. Davis hadn’t played in the AHL since the 2020-21 season with the Manitoba Moose and was playing this season with the Rapid City Rush serving as their alternate captain.

Game at a glance

The Wranglers switched back to Connor Murphy for this game after Waltteri Ignatjew got the start in their last game. On the other end was former Wrangler, Oscar Dansk. This game didn’t have a super spirited start but most of the shooting action came from the Gulls in the opening few minutes.
At 8:58, Rodwin Dionicio and Dryden Hunt were barking at each other prior to the face-off and after they had to redo the draw, the officials decided to cut them off. It looked like both were going to be sent off for a 10 minute game misconduct but Dryden Hunt ended up avoiding this call and was back on the ice for the face-off.
The first team on the board was the Wranglers at 15:53 when Martin Frk scored right off the face-off win. Clark Bishop assisted on this marker.
That was the only goal through the opening 20 minutes and Calgary led San Diego 1-0. Shots were 15-8 for the Gulls through the first. In the second, the pace was still pretty slow and no scoring changes came until the 8:30 mark. Wranglers newcomer, Brett Davis, set up Jonathan Aspirot for the one timer that he finished perfectly. Parker Bell also picked up the assist.
Just 42 seconds after this goal, another 10 minute misconduct was called against the Gulls. This time it was against Pavol Regenda for abuse of officials. The home team got a bit of relief at 12:20 when Artem Grushnikov was called for high sticking and the Gulls scored their first goal of the game on this power play.
The Gulls’ first goal came at 13:33 from Sasha Pastujov off a rocket of a one-timer. The exchange of goals brought some heightened emotions later in the period when Nathan Gaucher and Martin Frk were called for roughing. Gaucher was called for roughing twice so his penalty had to be served by Pastujov.
The action was cut short by the end of the period and the second finished with the Wranglers up 2-1 despite only putting up five shots to San Diego’s 13 in that period. The third period, similarly to the other frames took some time to get going but once it did, it didn’t stop.
A seven goal stretch started at 7:21 with a tying goal from Judd Caulfield. Caulfield forced a turnover and cut the crease on a breakaway to beat Murphy and put the game up to a 2-2 score. Less than a minute later, Parker Bell scored a go ahead goal at 8:02. He came into the zone alone and ripped a shot past Dansk to make it a 3-2 game. Bell’s goal was unassisted.
25 seconds later, the Gulls scored again with a goal from Tristan Luneau. Luneau jammed the puck in and put the Gulls right back at an even score. The Wranglers score another answer back goal just 55 seconds later. Morton was on the doorstep for the tap in and once again put the Wranglers up by one. Dryden Hunt and William Stromgren assisted on this fourth Wranglers goal of the evening.
The time between the next goal was a little longer but not long enough to take the Gulls out of this game. Pavol Regenda scored San Diego’s fourth goal of the night at 11:10 when he batted in a puck that popped up on the rebound. It was briefly reviewed for a high stick but this marker stood.
The Gulls didn’t let the Wranglers get the next one and scored their first go ahead goal of the night off a shorthanded marker from Nathan Gaucher at 14:45. He pick-pocketed the puck from Stromgren and scored on the breakaway.
The Wranglers were sweating a bit by this point in the game and pulled Connor Murphy for the extra attacker at 18:18. Time was quickly running out but with just 13 seconds to go, Hunter Brzustewicz was left undefended and buried the tying goal. Jeremie Poirier and Dryden Hunt assisted on this marker and on this same play, Carson Meyer and Jeremie Poirier were dealt offsetting minors.
Regulation came to an end and these two teams were tied 5-5. Overtime was short-lived and on the first shot from Clark Bishop, he scored the game winner. This goal just 47 seconds into overtime was assisted by Martin Frk and Ilya Solovyov and put away the game for Calgary.
Parker Bell was awarded the first star of the night and the other stars went to Gulls’ skaters. Shots finished 38-28 favouring the Gulls and Connor Muphy picked up his second consecutive win of the season.
