The Calgary Wranglers had some trouble against the San Jose Barracuda in Calgary earlier this month and it was the same story in a road meeting on Wednesday. The Wranglers tried a few different things with the lines and defensive pairings, but there wasn’t any production that came out of that. The Sharks’ affiliate managed to keep the Wranglers completely off the board and shut them out with a final score of 3-0.

Lineup notes

William Stromgren and Alex Gallant remained out of the lineup for this game as they nurse a couple of injuries. Sam Morton did slot back in after his stint with the Flames and Carter Wilkie made his season debut with the Wranglers for this game. The only unexpected Wrangler that came out of the lineup for this game was Aydar Suniev. It was announced prior to the game that he is dealing with an illness. He, Gallant and Stromgren are all on a day-to-day status.

Game at a glance

The Wranglers started Ivan Prosvetov for this game and on the other side, Gabriel Carriere was in net. This game took a little bit to get going and the first real pressure was brought on by a penalty against Calgary for delay of game at 5:14. The Wranglers played this kill well and only allowed one shot against on the man advantage.
In the second half of this period, the tables tilted heavily favoring the Barracuda. It started with a goal at 16:16 from Igor Chernyshov to open the scoring. Chernyshov took a shot from the point that beat Prosvetov blocker side.
In the last minute of the frame, San Jose added another from Cole Clayton at 19:20. It was practically a mirrored goal from the point with Clayton just getting a bit more behind the shot with the time and space to set up for a slap shot.
At the end of the first period, the Wranglers trailed 2-0 and were out-shot 14-5. In the second period, Calgary took an early penalty with Martin Frk getting tagged for high sticking. Just 37 seconds into this power play, the Barracuda made it a 3-0 game with a goal from Filip Bystedt. This was more of a weird goal when the initial shot popped up and Bystedt batted the puck in.
After this goal, Calgary and San Jose exchanged penalties but no other power play goals or goals in general would be registered. At the end of the second period, the Wranglers were down 3-0 and were out-shot in the middle frame.
Calgary had their best effort of the game through the last 20 minutes of regulation but nothing they did could reward them with a tally on their side of the scoreboard. They started the frame on the power play when San Jose was called for hooking at 1:50. They looked like they were going to have another power play opportunity at 6:11 but it was cut short by a holding call against Matvei Gridin 10 seconds later.
The Wranglers pushed on and got a few pucks on net but at 10:42, they were back to penalty killing when Martin Frk was called for roughing. In the last five minutes of the period, Calgary had a couple of looks but no results came of them. They opted to keep Prosvetov in net until the bitter end and lost 3-0 on the road. This loss snapped a brief two game winning streak and shots finished 33-22 favouring the home team.
Despite the final score, Parker Bell played one of his best games of the season with a confidence boosting effort alongside Sam Morton. He was positioned in high danger areas multiple times throughout this competition and had bursts of speed on rushes early and late in the game. It’s only a matter of time for number 22, who is still looking for his first goal of the season.

Next up

The was the first and only game for the Wranglers this week as they get to break up their 10 game road trip with some American Thanksgiving festivities or just a few days back home. It will be another six days before their next game action when they play the Abbotsford Canucks early next week. They’ll play Dec. 2 and 3 with game times going at 8:00 p.m. MT.
