The Calgary Wranglers kicked off a three game series against the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday. Game one was in San Jose and the other two will be in Calgary next week. The Wranglers brought the energy of the week into this game, but gave up the first goal of the game in the opening frame. Calgary scored the next three in the second period and ended up needing an overtime decision. Stromgren put up another three point night including the breakaway goal in the extra frame and the Wranglers won 4-3 for their third road win in a row decided out of regulation.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers kept things quite similar to the lines in Bakersfield. They made one adjustment to skate 11 forwards and seven defencemen. Carter Wilkie came out of the lineup and Lucas Ciona took his spot on the top line. Artem Grushnikov returned to the lineup and skated as the extra blueliner.

Game at a glance

After two straight starts and two wins for Arsenii Sergeev, the Wranglers switched things up and put Ivan Prosvetov in net for the Wranglers to wrap up the back-to-back. On San Jose’s side, they started Laurent Brossoit. Calgary was getting the opening chances in this game and got an early power play at 3:13 to keep that going. Turner Ottenbreit was taken down and drew this penalty.
The Wranglers put a couple of shots wide, then they were called on a penalty of their own for interference. Carter King took a seat and they had a four-on-four for 24 seconds before activating their penalty kill. San Jose scored first on this power play with a goal from Oliver Wahlstrom. He took a shot from the near faceoff dot and beat Prosvetov. This goal came at 6:23.
San Jose continued to get a few looks after this goal and just past the midway mark of the period, Calgary was able to take it a bit the other way. The line of Frk, Stromgren and Kerins got a couple of looks but couldn’t quite connect. Around the 16-minute mark of the period, Carter King was taken down along the boards in the offensive zone and shook his gloves off to cover his face for blood. He sat at the bench, then waited until the next media timeout to be attended to, as there are no tunnels behind the benches in San Jose. This put the Wranglers down to 10 forwards for the rest of the period.
A couple of minutes later, Calgary was trying some offensive zone pressure and while Lucas Ciona was screening the goaltender, he was pushed down to the ice. He chirped back and forth with Braden Hache after this and at 19:31, they were skating around center ice during a stoppage in play and gave each other some healthy pushes and shoves. They were called for coincidental roughing minors and they finished the period down 1-0. Shots through the opening 20 minutes were 13-10 San Jose.
In the second period, there was still 1:32 of penalty time remaining from Ciona’s and Hache’s minor calls. Carter King did not come out with the team and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Calgary adjusted to 10 forwards and seven defencemen for the rest of the game. Right as the four-on-four expired, Nick Cicek got the puck up to William Stromgren, who passed it to Daniil Miromanov for his second goal in two games and his fifth point in three games. This goal came at 1:41.
Calgary kept the pressure going for the minutes following and at 4:38, Rory Kerins broke up a Barracuda rush and William Stromgren was right there to bury the loose puck. His shot went right in and out and was unassisted.
At 6:09, Donavan Houle bowled over Ivan Prosvetov and knocked him on his back. All the Wranglers skaters on the ice went nuts in defence of their netminder. There was a media timeout right after this and Prosvetov was able to say in the game. The calls out of this resulted in offsetting roughing calls against Gavin White and Anthony Vincent, then an additional minor call against Donavan Houle for goaltender interference.
At 10:18, Martin Frk went bar down over the blocker side of Brssoit and instead of celebrating the goal with his teammates, he skated to the front of the Wranglers bench and pointed at the Barracuda bench. Little knock on the home squad for playing a rough game, hitting their goalie and putting up that ugly hit on Carter King. Frk’s goal was assisted by Rory Kerins and Etienne Morin.
At 12:16, Justin Kirkland was called for tripping and the Wranglers activated their penalty kill. At 13:29, Oliver Wahlstrom scored his second goal of the game with a power play marker past Prosvetov. Right after this goal, the Wranglers took another penalty. This time, William Stromgren was called for interference. Calgary only needed to penalty kill for 35 seconds then the Barracuda were called for high-sticking. After the four-on-four came to a close, the Wranglers had 25 seconds of a power play.
At 16:31, Hunter Brzustewicz was called for holding when he was trying to defend a Barracuda rush, then five seconds into this penalty, Turner Ottenbreit was called for slashing and Kasper Halttunen was called for unsportsmanlike conduct when they got tangled up on the draw. At 18:11, Lucas Vanroboys got the stick up on Gavin White and drew blood. Once Brzustewicz’s penalty was over, the Wranglers had an extended power play.
Rory Kerins and William Stromgren got a couple of shots on goal before the end of the period and Calgary had a 3-2 lead at the end of 40 minutes. Shots in the middle frame were 17-11 Calgary. To start the third, the Wranglers still had 2:11 of power play time carried over. Calgary had multiple grade-A chances on the rest of this power play, including a shot by Martin Frk off the crossbar. They weren’t able to add another on this chance.
They got another power play soon after when Egor Afanasyev was called for cross-checking. The Wranglers got a few shots on this chance but nothing past the home netminder. At 7:26, a penalty went the Wranglers’ way as Artem Grushnikov was called for tripping. Calgary killed that off and continued to protect their lead.
Sam Morton and David Silye got a couple of looks going the other way once the penalty expired at 14:40, Ivan Prosvetov made a sprawling save and David Silye and a Barracuda skater got caught up in a scrum after the whistle. This wasn’t enough to draw a penalty. At 16:46, Brendan Hoffmann was left undefended in the slot and scored on a mostly empty net as Prosvetov was on the other side of the net making the save. The Wranglers were able to defend any other chances before the end of regulation and it was a 3-3 game at the end of 60 minutes.
William Syrogmren, Daniil Miromanov, and Rory Kerins were out to start overtime and it looked like they went for the same type of play that won the game in Bakersfield on Friday. Miromanov went for the shot and looked up in disbelief when this one didn’t connect. However, on the next shift, William Stromgren broke out from the three Barracuda skaters and scored on the breakaway to put this game away.
Rory Kerins picked up the lone assist on this game winner 48 seconds into the extra frame. The celebration was a big one for this squad as they won all three games on the road this week and picked up six important points.
After the game, Stromgren said:
“It felt great. Our team hasn’t won two on the road in a while so it was good to help the team get two wins here to go back home and feel comfortable.”
The spirits were especially high after that game and Captain Clark Bishop also spoke about what the mentality was for that game after falling 7-2 and 5-1 in their last meetings against the Barracuda.
Bishop said:
“We haven’t won a game against them all year so I think it was in the back of our head all night that we wanted to beat them. We got 100% effort from everybody so it was good to come out with the win.”

Scoring stat summary

Rory Kerins – 2A
William Stromgren – 2G, 1A
