Notes and expectations
Since the last time the Wranglers played, they had a transaction between them and the NHL club. On Monday, Adam Klapka was called up from the Calgary Wranglers. It was announced that Anthony Mantha required season-ending surgery on his ACL so Klapka may be a longer-term call up to provide some depth for the NHL club.
Wranglers skaters that remain up with the Flames are Adam Klapka and Matt Coronato. Dryden Hunt was briefly up with the Flames but was reassigned to the Wranglers in favour of Klapka. Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr are still strong Flames call-up options so we may see rotating NHL coverage with that group with Mantha’s injury.
In injury news for the Wranglers, they did get a couple of forwards back from injury. Lucas Ciona and Martin Frk returned to the lineup last weekend and brought back the typical 12 forward and eight defencemen lineup. The only remaining injury we’re keeping our eyes on now is that of Alex Gallant. Gallant has yet to play a game with the Wranglers this year and his physicality has been missed.
The story of the Wranglers this year is very much influenced by the play of their netminder. Devin Cooely has remained consistently outstanding and continues to be recognized for it. He was named the player of the week last week with two shutouts and a 2-1-0 record in his three starts. He had briefly appeared in Ignatjew’s start against the Silver Knights but it did not go against his record. Cooley still leads the league in save percentage and shutouts and remains in the top three across the other major goaltending stat categories.
Cooley will likely start game one and possibly both depending on how Saturday goes. He’ll probably want to go for both as he plays his former organization for the first time this year. This series kicks off on Saturday night with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop in San Jose. They’ll play a back-to-back with an afternoon game on Sunday. Sunday’s game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. MT. Streaming options are available on Flo Hockey for a fee and FlamesNation contributors will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
