The Calgary Wranglers went 2-1-0-0 in their road series over the last week and return home for the weekend to host the San Diego Gulls. San Diego was actually where the Wranglers kicked off their California trip with a one game meeting against the Gulls last Saturday. Calgary took the win in overtime with a 6-5 final score.
Now, they’ll play a full two game set and determine if the Wranglers have that same edge against them on home ice.

Notes and expectations
It appeared Walker Duehr was on his way back to the Wranglers after being put on waivers on Tuesday, but unfortunately, he was claimed by the San Jose Sharks. With this vacancy in a centre role, the Flames called up Wranglers captain Clark Bishop to make his Flames debut on Thursday. Bishop previously played 47 games in the NHL between the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators before coming over to the Flames organization.
His first game as a Flame was overshadowed by the individual performances of Jakob Pelletier and Dustin Wolf, but he still looked like he belonged with the squad. He centred the fourth line of Jakob Pelletier and Ryan Lomberg before the lines took a shift in the middle of the game and Pelletier got promoted to the top line. He got seven shifts, just under five and a half minutes of ice time and one shot off in his Flames debut.
The Wranglers are running pretty lean on forwards these days and losing Duehr and now Bishop didn’t help their cause. Not to mention, Alex Gallant is unavailable as a lineup option for the rest of January due to his six game suspension. The organization looked within and made a move between the Rapid City Rush to add to their depth. The team announced on the 23rd that they recalled Connor Mylymok. Mylymok is a 24 year old left handed forward that can play both sides of the wing. This year with the Rush, he has 14 points in 30 games played so far. This production is split evenly as seven goals and seven assists.
Another announcement affecting the Wranglers roster came out on Friday with news of Tyson Barrie joining the team on a conditioning loan. The Wranglers have already been running with extra defencemen recently and this will continue with someone like Barrie on their roster for the interim. Tyson Barrie has only played in nine NHL games this year, scoring two points and hasn’t skated in a game with the Flames since Nov. 12 against the Vancouver Canucks. It seems Jonathan Aspirot may become very comfortable being a positioned defenceman playing forward with the fourth line for a while.
Calgary’s last game was on Monday and was quite a blowout for the AHL’s best team. Some weaknesses were exposed against the Ontario Reign and they took a 6-1 victory over the Wranglers. It was one of those games where you missed the talents of Devin Cooley. However, Cooley’s return could be sooner rather than later as he hits the two week mark of concussion recovery. Once he is healed, healthy and cleared, the Wranglers will upskill that part of their game again. The All-Star game he is also set to participate in is just over a week away if that is a consideration is his return to play plan.
This series between the Gulls and Wranglers starts on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. MT and continues into Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. MT matinee game. Games can be caught in person at the Saddledome or streamed live for a fee on Flo Hockey. Sportsnet 960 also has you covered with the radio call and multiple FlamesNation contributors will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
