The AHL affiliates of the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have yet to face off this season yet, but this weekend that changes. The Calgary Wranglers host the Bakersfield Condors for a Pacific Division Battle in Alberta on Saturday and Sunday.
Calgary is on a current three game winning streak and the Condors lost their last two in Colorado. The Wranglers have worked their way up to the top three in the Division and look to keep that climb to the top going.

Notes and expectations

Calgary played their first game of the season with a rotating seven defender system on Wednesday. Every other game up to that point was played with the typical 12 and eight system. This was leveraged last year when the team was short bodies and with Alex Gallant on a three game suspension, it made sense to get more guys in on the back end.
One of the biggest shining points from the Wranglers’ series earlier this week was the confidence and nearly perfect play from netminder Ivan Prosvetov. Prosvetov only let a single puck past him in over 125 minutes of play over the back to back start. After getting a shutout on Tuesday, the coaching staff opted to go with him the next night, where he only let one in during regulation and stopped all three shooters in the shootout.
Prosvetov was below .900 in his save percentage for his other three starts but the last two have been 1.000 and .962. Now that can’t be expected every night but very impressive against the team that hoisted the Calder Cup a mere five months ago. With a four game week, it’s highly unlikely we see him in both games this weekend but Owen Say has also made a positive addition to the team. This goaltending tandem is starting to settle in and they’re giving their team a chance to win.
A skater to watch going into these games is Aydar Suniev. Suniev has puckhandling skills that have started to show through and got the monkey off his back, so to speak, with his first professional goal on Oct. 28. Suniev has got a talented six ahead of him to push out for top two line playing time but if this goal slingshots him to some confidence and offensive momentum, he could make that case. Especially if the shift rotations are in that 11 forward system for these games, which requires a few guys to pick up extra shifts on the fourth line.
This series starts on Saturday afternoon for a matinee game at 1 p.m. MT. It’ll continue on Sunday (remember to turn your clocks back) for another afternoon game at 1 p.m. MT. You can catch these games in person at the Scotiabank Saddledome or stream them for a fee on Flo Hockey. Multiple FlamesNation contributors will also have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
