Notes

– There were a ton of scouts at the Abbotsford game on Friday night, and I’ve heard the Flames are shopping everyone not named Ken King from very peripheral sources. Weisbrod won’t put lipstick on a pig and he pulls major strings internally with player transactions. I’d be shocked if this team doesn’t add some picks and ship out some bodies in the coming months if the team doesn’t resemble a club that will be in the thick of a playoff hunt; but that’s more opinion that fact.

– Flames: Once Backlund and Carson are healthy there will be two more bodies sent down. (Smith??/Horak???/Carson Conditioning Stint??/Stajan??). It also probably only a matter of time before Ortio is the lone back-up to Irving, but there seems to be a desire that he has to clearly beat out Brown for the job… which will likley have to happen in practice as Irving has played all 300 minutes to this point, and will likely play Saturday (he did – ed.). Ward suggested a back-up would get into a game on the coming road trip that sees the club play four games in 7 days in Ontario and Michigan.

– Chris Breen has been outplayed by James Martin on a physicality and intensity measure, and will have a tough time getting regular minutes once another defender is assigned from Calgary. Wouldn’t be shocked to see this team move a defender (Henry, Wilson, Mikkelson, Piskula are all grizzled VETS, meaning anyone not named Brodie isn’t going to get much ice behind them).

– This will be a very competitive hockey team this season. Up untitl Saturday, they had allowed just 8 goals in 5 games… Boom.

– Nemisz has looked great at times this season. more consistancy and physicality has been showed (first AHL fight last week).  He and Walters, Desbiens, and Mikkelson are driving possession and scoring chances in a big way. Mikkleson especially looks strong against AHL foes, he’s not far off from NHL games… or he’s a stud in the AHL that won’t make it… not sure which.

– Howse is a recent healthy scratch in favor of Armstrong…not a fourth line type and not strong enough to break the top-six on the Heat currently.

(Thanks again to ‘Slippery Pete’ for his insight)

Just the opposite is needed; trade, fire, retire, remove Ken King and his new sidekick Feaster and start again! Maybe we should try a top down review of the organization performed by someone actually qualified to conduct it (ie: not King)

Good read by the way, its good to keep up with happenings on the farm.

Great article Kent and Slippery Pete (is that your pseudonym?), having this every 2 weeks would be nice! As for the happenings….too bad about Howse, and YES would like to see him play with Horak but actually like Horak with Flames. Breen needs to wake up! Nice to see development of Nemisz, Desbiens, and other forwards. AND love that several D-men down there are doing well as I think they TRULY ARE trade-bait in the NHL when other NHL teams have injuries come up. So here’s the trade proposal to Nashville – Rene Bourque, Brendan Mikkelson, Derek Smith and a 2013 2nd-rounder for Ryan Suter and a 4th rounder in 2012. Or same trade for Ryan Callahan (NYR forward). Both pretty unlikely but you never know!

Desbiens. There’s that name again! (Sorry Kent, couldn’t resist!)

I have always thought Ryan Walter’s kid had some game in him. I hope he continues to improve, though he (Ben) is not a youngster anymore.

Good update. How does Meyer look? No points yet, hey? I still like Meyer.

  • Flamin Cannot's

That sucks about Howse, he’s pretty much completely off of Twitter as well, so that sucks, he was fun on Twitter.

I hope he gets it together and starts putting the work in. Same thing with Breen, he looked so Good last year.

Kent…great article! Please provide more updates on the Heat. Other than the odd trade and offseason signing of free agents these guys are the future of the Flames franchise.

Nice to see a first rounder (Nemeiz) finally start to develop. When Horak gets sent down would be great to see how he plays with former junior team mate Ryan Howse.

    @ Slippery Pete

    Real good work here! Thanks.

We were all wondering what the Flames were doing with the huge collection of defensemen they put together over the summer. It seems that this has now turned into an organizational strength. I can see them packaging some youth out with a vet to bring in a top 4 defender, or a #1 center for the big team. Maybe the Bourque trade rumors have some merit.

    8 goals in 5 games – now that’s impressive.

Just want to say this stuff is awesome. I love having the occasional AHL/WHL report come through, ’cause as much as I enjoy info about the big club (and the analysis is top-notch), stuff on the minors and junior is way harder to come by since we can’t even watch most of the games.

It’s too bad on Howse so far. I’m not giving up on the kid at this point (it is his first year in the pros, after all), but it’s unfortunate that he’s having so much trouble adapting. And on that note, I’m really hoping Horak gets sent down sooner rather than later so that he gets actual playing time as opposed to eating popcorn and “learning from above” like a chump. If there’s one thing Horak doesn’t need, it’s birds-eye crap; he thinks the game well, and just needs to learn to apply his brains to his extremities offensively.

I would imagine Howse will be assigned to the ECHL soon. He needs minutes and i dont think he is gonna get top 6 mins until an injury occurs.

Really surprised that Ward didn’t play a backup on sat. Irving can handle the games but even he needs rest.

Nemisz is really coming into his own. Brodie looks like he has the AHL figured out and wow, Jordan Henry is Giordano impressive.

Breen must have really rested on his laurels this summer. He seems slower than last year. Dissapointing, but James Martin looks like an excellent pickup. Liked the kid when he played for the Ice, and he looks pretty good so far in his first two games.
