Flames trade Blake Comeau to Columbus

TSN is reporting the Flames have moved former waiver wire pick-up Blake Comeau to the very active Columbus Blue Jackets for a fifth round pick today. Comeau struggled to score in Calgary and had a dreadful start to the season, but developed into a decent middle tier option for the Flames both last season and for the majority of this one.

Comeau can skate and isn’t afraid to mix it up physically, but he’s probably one of the dumber hockey players on the ice at any give time and he doesn’t have the best hands. Few players can enter the zone, circle behid the net and then give the puck away like Comeau.

He’s a replaceable piece and a 5th round choice means the organization essentially gets something for nothing given how he was acquired.

Thanks Blake! Good luck in Columbus…

Kent, you should be working for hockeydb or hockey futures…that is bar none the most succinct, yet funniest player synopsis I have ever read.

    Kudos.

Feaster just stated point blank that Edwards has told him that his marching orders are to make the playoff next season. What an idiot Edwards is.

I feel I’m right re: the plan:

    – grab as much young talent from the draft this year as possible.
    – supplement that wih older prospects (lower tier though they may be) close to stepping in.
    – free up as much cap space as possible to go after players other teams can’t retain.

Not sure I understand it. Flames and Edwards are in for a big surprise. We are now firmly in Oil country and the only route out is patience and drafting.

Seriously, what can Calgary possibly get to turn this team from 28th to at least 8th?

Prediction: Feaster gets fired next summer (2014).

I applaud the fact our mandate is to make the playoffs next year..

Not at the expense of mortgaging our future but still.

Do you think MTL went into this season planning to suck just cause they were bottom 3 last year?

No, they went out and addressed their weaknesses and now are at the top of the heap.

I’m not saying that is what will happen to us but honestly if we get some more centers on our team and improved goaltending, with the addition of some hard hitting defence we will not be as horrible as we were this year.

Our true weakness this season was going into the year with Backlund and Stajan as our only NHL centers. Kippers play hasnt helped…

  • Feaster’s best move as Flames’ GM…picks up a guy off waivers and turns him into a 5th round pick. Probably says something about Feaster’s tenure that that would be his best move in the past year and a half!

Comeau was a somewhat frustrating player to watch. He often got into very good positions, either by out-skating the opposition or using what seemed to be, in certain limited ways, better hockey smarts than you give him credit for. It’s what he would do with the puck once he had it and was in a good position that was almost always a let-down. If he didn’t turn it over, he’d shoot, and his shot (plus his choice of places to shoot from) really stinks. Earlier this season he got his first goal and after that he would shoot every time even if passing was clearly the better option. With him out there the Flames tic-tac-toe plays became tic-tac-oh-@#$%-comeau-you’re-not-a-@#$%ing-shooter!!! plays.

I can’t shake the feeling that there’s a smart coach out there who knows drills and lessons that would improve this kids shot and teach him when to pass and when to shoot. He could be a really good player if he learned those lessons. Oh well. He didn’t do it in Calgary. Better luck in Columbus!

  • Woah woah woah, we didn’t get Atkinsson or Johanson? Come on now, Comeau had like 30 goals a couple seasons ago, he was awesome, a real classy guy. He’s AT LEAST worth a good prospect and a second.

    /delusion

Good riddance. I liked him at first because of his drive, willingness to go to the dirty areas. I remember Comeau’s first game as a Flame; on a listless, tired team, he was laying hits, driving to the net, and enabling scoring chances.

Then he took a stupid, boneheaded boarding penalty where the announcers were questioning suspension. And he continued to take similar penalties throughout the season.

Comeau, we didn’t care to know thee.

Very kind of you to say “one of the dumber” players on the ice, when I think we all know he was possibly the dumbest in the NHL. He’s got the physical tools of a very good player, and it takes a very poor hockey brain to ruin that.

  • MC Hockey

Great news. Nobody mentioned but he was also a UFA so any return is great.

The guy probably has potential but glad to see him go. He was one of Feaster’s “Sutter-like” pick-ups in that JayFe thought he was undervalued and could succeed here but it did not work out.

I just really HOPE the money Flames use money they could have badly spent on Comeau to re-sign Backlund and ALSO Cervenka who is talented enough to warrant another chance at a reasonable salary. I say get Backlund for $4M over 2 years and Cervenka for $3.5M over 2 years. REBUILD ON!

    • I’d really like to see the Flames lock up Backlund to a long deal this off season.

The gap between his underlying numbers and his production is so great that we have an opportunity for some value.

It is well worth the risk to take a shot that a guy with great possession numbers, chances are his production will start to match his underlying numbers. Obviously there are no guarantee’s and injuries could be a in issue for Backlund going forward. However, in light of the fact that the Flames have very few guys who really drive the play, it’s well worth the risk to lock up a guy who does.

I wouldn’t be opposed to 15mil of five years. Chances are this will look like a steal in 2 years

      • SmellOfVictory

Agreed. I’d take any length of deal for Backlund, to be honest. The full 7 (or is the max 8?) years at something around that AAV would be totally good with me. 3 mil AAV is what you’d pay a good 3rd line C, and Backlund is already better than that.

I don’t blame many for not noticing but last game Backs, Hudler and Cervenka were used quite regularily by Hartley and they seemed extemely effective. I thought they were our best line.

Theres not doubt in my mind Cervenka will sign here again, especially after all the icetime he will rack up to finish the season.

Looks like Cervenka won’t be making much more this year than his $925,000 base salary and a 10% signing bonus of his 3.775 cap hit. There was very little chance he would ever make the bonus thresholds.

I don’t think he’s in line for a raise but I liked his creativity; I’d resign him, maybe 1.2 mil for one year or 1 mil per year for two years.

I agree, I think he deserves another shot at up to $1.5M salary as he is a better risk than players like, oh I don’t know, Comeau at that price.

If Scott Hannan is still in the league, I mean brought in a seventh rounder surely Sarich could fetch something, no? Must be the remaining year on his contract.
