The National Hockey League’s opening roster deadline is Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. MT. At that point teams need to file a 23-man roster with the league that is salary cap compliant, at which point they can put players on Long-Term Injured Reserve or otherwise tweak or tinker with things.
The Calgary Flames have a bunch of moving parts around their club that could impact their roster decisions in one way or another. Here’s a quick primer of where things stand right now.
Tanner Glass
Glass, 33, is in town on a pro try-out. Yes, still. His continued presence suggests that he’s going to be signed, because if he wasn’t going to be signed they would have cut him today (or earlier).

Troy Brouwer
Sportsnet 650’s Rick Dhaliwal, who’s broken some news this summer already, dropped this nugget today during all the Jagr hubbub.
Hearing possible Troy Brouwer trade out of Calgary. Not confirmed, just something heard.

Jagr’s signing drops Brouwer to the fourth line. At this point, both he and the Flames may be looking for an exit strategy: Brouwer didn’t come here to be a fourth liner, and the Flames don’t want to shell out $4.5 million a year for one, either. (Curtis Lazar is a much better fit on the right side of the fourth line.) Brouwer has a no-trade clause in his contract, so he’d need to approve the swap, and the Flames would almost definitely need to retain salary to make something happen.
Not a lot of teams have cap space for Brouwer right now, but that could change after they file their initial rosters and then move players onto LTIR.
Mark Jankowski
Jankowski skated as the extra man this morning. He doesn’t require waivers to go down to the AHL. If Glass is signed, and it’s really looking that way, then Jankowski likely has to go down so there’s a roster spot for Jagr to take when the time comes. (Unless Brouwer, or somebody else, is traded to open up a spot before Jagr arrives.)
Jaromir Jagr
The newest Flame – man that’s weird to see in writing – still has to go through the immigration process before he can make the trek to town, and it’s looking like that could be delayed.
Flames may not make Jagr deal official for another few days. Club working on immigration issues. Jagr not expected in Calgary until Wed.

Jagr doesn’t count against the cap or the roster limit until the deal is filed with the league and becomes official (presumably when the immigration stuff is all settled). Most likely, he will not be on the initial 23-man roster. As our pal Pat Steinberg noted on Twitter, this means that the Flames could keep both Jankowski and Glass on the NHL roster – at least temporarily.
Don’t expect Jagr for the season opener – but hopefully for the home one.

Long story short: there are a lot of moving parts. Keep your eyes on Twitter and FlamesNation for more on, well, everything as it develops.
