Life hasn’t been great for the Calgary Flames this season, as they spiral out of control in the general vicinity of missing the playoffs. But the team’s prospects have been a bright spot, notably several players on the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.
Unfortunately, we have some bad news: top AHL scorer Andrew Mangiapane will undergo shoulder surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

Mangiapane, 21, was in the midst of his second pro season and has generally been a great performer for the Heat. He’s amassed 46 points in 39 AHL games, and would have had more games and points had he not been up with the Flames in the NHL for a good chunk of the year, playing his first 10 big-league games. He played almost exclusively in a bottom six winger role, but he didn’t look a bit out of place.
Mangiapane’s injury extinguishes the possibility of his return to the NHL this season – we can still hold out hope for a Rasmus Andersson appearance – and puts the pressure on the likes of Spencer Foo, Morgan Klimchuk, Hunter Shinkaruk and Brett Findlay to generate offense for the Heat as they fight for a Calder Cup playoff spot.
Nothing to do with article, but does anyone know a good website to find out about NCAA and Fox’s next game? Never find the ncaa website that useful.

Some pretty good numbers the last two games.
At the bottom of the page.
Which means a productive summer of off-ice strength training cut short. Bad news for him as that will likely mean he starts in Stockton again come fall. Watching his games with Calgary, he looked to have the skill set, but got knocked around a lot. A good summer of training could have made the difference.
Exactly. I don’t know how long his recovery will be, but hopefully he can pack a lot of training into a month or two.
Hopefully he can still work on gaining core/leg strength, while shoulder is rehabbing on own. Everything else outside of strength on his skates is ready for the NHL.
No Monny, Backs as well as Chuckie at practice. Tomo could be real ugly.
Hopefully just true maintenance days for Monny and Backs. GG sounded a little more dire when he said we’ll see. But that could just be him being frustrated wondering why it’s not working out.
Wow that sucks! is what it is… I hope the surgery is flawless and you heal quick and well Mangi! See you back next year. All the Best.
Better send Brouwer down to plug the hole.
Send Hathaway down
I don’t think Brouwer can go down, as much as I’d like to see it happen.
No one would pick him up off waivers.
Are waivers still a thing after the deadline?
I never heard that he was injured but when I did not see him in the starting line up I was hoping he was just fighting the flew. Is there any word on how he sustained the injury? Shoulders injuries will negatively impact his off ice training which he desperately needs.
Or the flu
Let’s hope that the time off recovering will help him bulk up and ready for camp. Adding 10 to 20 pounds will help this kid make it to Calgary.
I agree that he will probably start next season here in Stockton.
SF, I’d be interested to hear your take on Foo’s development and whether you think he progressed enough this year to seriously compete for a RW spot on the Flames next year. Also if you think he has the makings of a true scoring threat.
Foo has developed nicely throughout the year. He is now on top line with Colin Smith and Mangia…..wait, now with Pollock. I would say the game has slowed for him, especially when the calendar changed. As stated below, 190 lbs. is very generous. He looks like he is about 170, but he is a little stronger than Mangiapane. Both could use a little muscle.
As for competing for RW next year, I think he will take the path of the aforementioned Mangiapane, And even Mark Jankowski. He will start the year in Stockton. He will probably be first call up when injury hits. Probably a few weeks up there, a few games of popcorn, and based on results, either becomes a Calgary fixture or a player who gets sent back to “work on his game”.
Thanks SF!
Mangiapane is listed at 184 pounds. I’m no sports trainer but for his height 190 pounds seems like the upper limit or he will lose speed.
184 pounds is generous. He may be 184 when he is carrying 2 bags of ice. I have seen him up close. 170, 175 maybe. If he were a solid 185 to 190, that would be fine. Shinkaruk is listed at 190 and looks it. Foo is listed at 190 and looks 170. I am just saying the kid can add a little muscle over the summer.
185 to 190 sounds perfect. I agree that 170-175 is too light given the way he plays
Kind of shows the way things are going for this organization these last few weeks of this season. Hope he recovers quickly and is raring to go next season. Sad way to end the year indeed.
His absence really sucks for the Heats playoff ambitions. They won’t be able to replace him. Really crappy news all around
Some CFL players will arrive shortly…
We are hanging on to 4th right now with a weekend pair against Tucson after a Wednesday battle with Milwaukee.
Reading these comments made me realise what a GEM we have in SF.
First hand, intelligent insights from our farm. Unfiltered by the Flames or some kind of media bias. Keep it up SF, you are invaluable to our understanding of the kids. Terrific stuff, we’re all very appreciative of the constant stream of intel
So much for a late-season call up to evaluate him at the NHL level. Maybe this will give him a chance to add some size/strength, but this type of injury usually precludes a lot of gym time. Hope he’s in game shape by September.
Maybe Mangiapane was getting pushed off the puck in the NHL because he needed shoulder surgery….?

No update at all in Byng’s injury situation?
I thought we would have heard by now….
WW
Morning skate coming up. Sounds like Benny could be skating in his place.
From what I’ve read so far, it appears Byng is out with a upper body injury.
Looks like Versteeg is joining the Jankowski line and Bennett moves up to Backlund’s line.
