Quips and Quotes: Flames lose to Panthers 3-2 (in a shootout)

The Calgary Flames lost to the Florida Panthers by a 3-2 score (in a shootout) on Thursday night. Here are selected reactions from players and coaches following the game.
Not quite good enough
Flames head coach Bill Peters was pretty positive about his team’s performance, including having some praise for goaltender Mike Smith’s effort. But he pointed to the thin margins at this time of year between winning and losing, as well as some specifics that probably cost them points.
“They got two goals after we iced it,” said Peters. “Icing, no change, fresh guys, tired guys. We got one in Tampa. They iced it, we had fresh guys, tired guys. It’s a fine line. Details matter. Today was no different.”
No Neal equals line re-shuffling
Peters shuffled his lines after the Flames’ loss in Tampa. His new lines lasted roughly a period and a half before James Neal left the game with an injury.
Without Neal, lines looked primarily like this:
- Gaudreau – Monahan – Lindholm
- Tkachuk – Backlund – Frolik
- Mangiapane – Jankowski – Bennett
- Garnet Hathaway had 8 seconds of ice time in the third period, while Derek Ryan was used primarily on the power play (and had 54 seconds of even strength usage in the third).
Peters had no updates on Neal following the game. The Flames are carrying one extra forward, Austin Czarnik, so if the thought is Neal will be out for awhile expect the Flames to bring a forward up from Stockton.
