In advance of Wednesday night’s playoff game between the Calgary Flames and the Colorado Avalanche, the National Hockey League has announced its 31 nominees for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. Flames captain Mark Giordano has been named his team’s nominee for the award.

The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is awarded “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.” It’s named after a former Toronto Maple Leafs player who was renowned for his off-ice contributions.

Giordano, 35, has been a frequent team nominee for the King Clancy but has yet to take it home. He’s been a past winner of the NHL Foundation Player Award and the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for his off-ice work in the Calgary community. Giordano was also Calgary’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication.

Previous Flames players to win the King Clancy include Lanny McDonald, Joe Nieuwendyk and Jarome Iginla, so he’d be in good company if he’s able to bring home the honour.
