The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their eight game season series against the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday night. They have struggled against this team all season, only putting up their first win against them on Saturday night. Calgary wasn’t able to get one more win in and ended up falling 4-2 in this game.

There were just a couple of swaps in the lineup for this game. Carter Wilkie came out and Ryan Chyzowski made his Wranglers debut after being called up from Rapid City earlier this week. On the blue line, there was just one change with Artem Grushnikov coming out and Etienne Morin coming in.

Ivan Prosvetov

Game at a glance

Both teams swapped netminders for this game with Ivan Prosvetov getting the start for the Wranglers and Gabriel Carriere getting the start for the Barracuda. The Wranglers got the first power play of the game when Luca Cagnoni was called for hooking at 1:38. Just under 30 seconds into this man advantage, the Barracuda took another penalty for delay of game. The Wranglers had 1:33 of time to work with for the five on three.
Martin Frk got the best look of this two man advantage and William Stromgren also got a look. The Barracuda managed to kill off one penalty and six seconds before the second expired, the Barracuda scored a shorthanded goal on the first shot on Prosvetov. This goal came from Patrick Giles. San Jose added another at 7:12 with a bar down shot from Mattias Havelid. This goal came on the second shot of the night and felt deflating at this point in the game. The Barracuda continued to attack after this goal and peppered Prosvetov with shots to try to extend the lead.
Around the 14-minute mark of the period, Rory Kerins lost an edge along the boards, twisted his ankle and needed to limp off the ice. He stayed on the bench for a bit, then skated a few circles at the media timeout. He tried to stay in the game but needed to go off to get looked at.
At 14:39, the Wranglers got another chance on the power play when Nolan Allan was called for interference on Ryan Chyzowski. The Wranglers managed a couple of shots on the man advantage, but by the end of the period, Calgary was still down 2-0. They were doubled up in shots 12-6 in the first frame.
Rory Kerins was not on the bench in the middle frame and did not return for the rest of the game. There was a flurry of shots in the early minutes of the second period on Ivan Prosvetov but he managed to turn these away. At 3:55, Braden Hache tripped up William Stromgren and 30 seconds into this power play, Aydar Suniev scored to cut the Barracuda’s lead in half. Sam Morton and William Stromgren picked up the assists on this marker.
Just under four minutes later, the Wranglers were back in the game when newcomer Ryan Chyzowski stripped the puck by lifting it over the stick of the San Jose skater, came up on a breakaway and scored off the post and in. Etienne Morin picked up the lone assist on this marker at 8:07.
The Wranglers could barely celebrate that goal when the Barracuda took it the other way and Oliver Wahlstrom scored on a rebound on the doorstep at 8:29. Prosvetov had to bounce back quickly after this one as more shots were coming. Calgary managed a few more shots on the back end of the period and at 19:37, they were penalty killing for the first time this game when Clark Bishop was called for slashing.
The second period came to a close and the Wranglers were trailing 3-2. Shots were 13-9 San Jose in the middle frame. Calgary started with some carryover penalty time from Bishop’s call but managed to kill it off. Shortly after his penalty expired, Egor Afanasyev got a back-door set up and buried it. The fourth goal of the night for San Jose came 2:14 into the third period.
Calgary took another penalty at 8:58, when Ivan Prosvetov tripped up a Barracuda skater. Martin Frk went to the box to serve this call. A few minutes later, Martin Frk was actually called for a penalty of his own for hooking at 15:09.
After this penalty, Ivan Prosvetov came off for the extra attacker at 17:32, then the Wranglers called a timeout to try and make something happen in the last two minutes of regulation. Calgary kept them away from scoring on the empty net and put up six more shots before the game came to an end. The Wranglers fell 4-2. Shots finished 38-24 for the Barracuda.
Ryan Chyzowski cracked the three stars in this game picking up the third star for his first goal with the team. Head Coach Brett Sutter was happy with what he saw out of the Rapid City call-up and said post-game, “You know what, I thought he was one of our best players today. I thought he brought energy. I thought he was physical. I thought he was one of the few guys that had some life and some jump, so good for him.”

Scoring stat summary

William Stromgren – 1A
