Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday! In case you missed last week’s edition, we’re bringing back a much-beloved series across the Nation Network.
So, without further ado…
On this day in 2008, the @Calgary Flames traded for defenceman Jim Vandermeer, then of the @Philadelphia Flyers, for a 2009 third-round draft pick.
The native of nearby Caroline had already bounced around the league a bit that season. He started with the @Chicago Blackhawks playing 26 games scoring 2-7—9 before being traded to Philly for Ben Eager.
With Philadelphia, the journeyman scored 1-5—6 in 28 games, before his trade to the Flames.
His scoring pace continued to slow down that year, as with Calgary he scored only two assists in 21 games. Vandermeer played only one more year with the Flames in 2008-09 scoring 1-6—7 in only 45 games.
He played 16:18 a night in seven playoff games for the Flames that year scoring no points.
Calgary eventually flipped him that offseason to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Brandon Prust, who the Flames had traded only a few months earlier to the Coyotes.
Vandermeer bounced around the NHL between 2009 and his final North American pro season in 2012-13 with stints with the @Edmonton Oilers, @San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Wolves of the AHL.
Since then, he’s found a nice home for himself in the Elite Ice Hockey League playing for the Belfast Giants, who he’s been with for four years. His offensive game has flourished more than it had since his days in the WHL and in 143 EIHL games, “Vandy” has scored 21 goals and another 59 assists.
